history
When Allegheny County was founded in 1788 , the area where Etna is today was initially part of Deer Township. From 1805 the Indiana Township was spun off from this. In 1845, parts of the Indiana and Ross Township were finally formed into Marion Township, which was finally named on March 20, 1847 in honor of former judge Charles Shaler (1821-35 in Allegheny County). At the mouth of Pine Creek, a small town structure was built around the ironworks located there, which was separated from the Shaler Township in 1868 and given the name Etna. The namesake of the new city was the Etna in Sicily, because the glowing fires of the melting furnaces, which were reflected on the surrounding hills, reminded the inhabitants of the valley of volcanoes. Henry Ochse, of German descent, became the first mayor of the new city.
Until the crisis in the 1970s , Etna, like the entire metropolitan region of Pittsburgh, was strongly influenced by the iron processing industry located there. In Enta itself these were Spang, Chalfant & Co. with Isabelle Furnace and production facilities of the Carnegie steel empire .
