Eugene Speer

Eugen Speer (born January 22, 1887 in Bruchsal , † October 7, 1936 in Hagsfeld near Karlsruhe ) was a German politician ( NSDAP ). From 1934 to 1935 he was mayor of Radolfzell on Lake Constance .

Life

Eugen Speer was baptized a Protestant and grew up as the son of an unmarried mother. At the age of 17 he joined the Imperial Navy of the German Empire . He was one of the leading figures in the November Revolution of 1918/1919 in Kiel.

He had been a member of the NSDAP since 1922. He became district leader and district inspector and went through training courses at the " Reichsfuhrer School of the NSDAP " in Bernau near Berlin . He was also chairman of the district council and a member of the Baden state parliament for the NSDAP .

On February 10, 1934, Speer, one of the " old fighters ", was appointed mayor by Gauleiter Robert Wagner on April 1, 1934, making him Radolfzell's first National Socialist mayor. With the dismissal of the long-time mayor Otto Blesch , also a member of the NSDAP since 1933, the local council (from 1935 "councilors' college") was immediately replaced.

On Speer's initiative, Radolfzell became the seat of the SA Reiter Standard 156 and the location of an SS barracks. Shortly after taking office as Mayor of Radolfzell, he signed contracts with architects and contractors for the new construction of the barracks (from 1939 SS barracks Heinrich Koeppen ); The city of Radolfzell donated 55 hectares of its municipal area in the northwest of the city to the German Empire.

Speer's term of office in Radolfzell ended due to immense mismanagement with the formal removal from office in June 1935. He had already invested 800,000 Reichsmarks for the relocation of the station to Haselbrunnsteg in Radolfzell and the construction of the SS barracks, but without any financial commitments.

Speer, known as "Field Marshal of Lake Constance", was an honorary citizen of Radolfzell and Güttingen; this was withdrawn from him posthumously on December 15, 2010 by the city council of Radolfzell on Lake Constance.
