Subsequently, Steuben and his regiment took part in the battles of Spichern and Gravelotte in the war against France . During the subsequent siege of Metz , he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on September 2, 1870 . In the further course of the war he fought at Beaune-la-Rolande , Orléans and Le Mans and received the Iron Cross, 2nd class.

On January 12th, Steuben was appointed chief of the 7th Company at the same time as his promotion . This was followed by a use in the Infantry Regiment No. 98 with effect from April 1, 1881 . As a major , on October 13, 1887, he was appointed battalion commander. While being promoted to lieutenant colonel , Steuben was transferred to the 3rd Grand Ducal Hessian Infantry Regiment (Leib-Regiment) No. 117 in Mainz on January 27, 1892, as a regular staff officer . In this position, promoted to colonel on September 12, 1894 , Steuben finally received command of the infantry regiment "Prince Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau" (1st Magdeburgisches) No. 26 on October 27, 1894 . In approval of his resignation request, he was put up for disposition on March 19, 1896, with a pension and authorization to wear the regimental uniform.

On September 15, 1904, Steuben received the character of major general.
