Eugène Guillaume
Jean-Baptiste Claude Eugène Guillaume (born July 4, 1822 in Montbard , Département Côte-d'Or , † March 1, 1905 in Rome ) was a French sculptor , university professor and art critic .
Life
He studied from 1841 under Pierre-Jules Cavelier , Jean-François Millet and Louis-Ernest Barrias at the École des Beaux-Arts . Guillaume won the Prix de Rome in 1845 with his work Theseus Finds the Father's Sword on a Stone . Guillaume became director of the École des Beaux-Arts in 1864 and was director general of the Institute of Fine Arts from 1878 to 1879. Guillaume was director of the Académie de France à Rome from 1891 to 1904 . The sculptor Auguste Rodin made a bronze bust of him in 1903.
His awards include honorary membership in the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1869 and membership in the Académie française (Fauteuil 21) since 1898, succeeding Henri d'Orléans, duc d'Aumale .
Works (selection)
Many of his works can now be found in public places in important cities in France. Further works can be found, for example, in Reims (bronze statue by Colbert ), in Dijon (the Rameau monument). The Musée du Luxembourg houses the statue Anakreon (1852), the statue Un Faucheur (1855) and the marble bust of Mgr Georges Darboy (1874), now the Musée d'Orsay . The Versailles Museum houses the portrait of Adolphe Thiers , the Sorbonne the marble bust of Victor le Clerc . Further works can be found in the Trinity Church in Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois and the Church of Saint Clotilde in Paris. The Les Gracques statue (1853) is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris .
