Eugenia "Genie" Brandt Böhlke , formerly Eugenia Louisa Brandt (born June 27, 1928 in Black Diamond , Washington ; died February 14, 2001 in Malvern , Pennsylvania ), was an American ichthyologist .

Education and academic career

Eugenia Louisa Brandt began her academic training in 1945 at Valparaiso University in Indiana and moved to Stanford University after a year . There she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1949 . In 1951 she received a master's degree in chemistry, also from Stanford University. At that time, Brandt's career was focused on biochemistry, she published eight publications on the biochemistry of carcinogenesis between 1950 and 1952 .

In 1951 Brandt married her fellow student, James E. Böhlke , who was two years his junior , and from 1952 to 1955 they had two sons and a daughter. During this time, Eugenia B. Böhlke worked at Stanford University to provide for a family living and to finance the ichthyologist James E. Böhlke's doctoral studies. When James E. Böhlke was offered a three-year position at the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University in 1954 to write a handbook on the fish fauna of the Bahamas, the family moved to Philadelphia . The monograph Fishes of the Bahamas and adjacent tropical waters was published in 1968, but trips by the Böhlke family to the Bahamas in connection with this project took place until November 1973. At her husband's institute, Böhlke worked in various positions, starting with cataloging the fish collection. Over time, she has worked as a chemical engineer, research biologist, museum executive, and research associate , and almost always worked with her husband. She later stated that both of them considered raising their children to be their profession and studying science as their hobby at the time.

James E. Böhlke's second major scientific project was a volume from 1969 on eel species (Anguilliformes) as part of a nine-part work on the fish of the western North Atlantic. The external financing of the project made it possible to employ Eugenia B. Böhlke as a technician. She took the opportunity to work on her own scientific career and focused her interest primarily on the moray eels (Muraenidae) . She quickly became a leading expert in the taxonomy of this fish family.

James E. Böhlke lost his position at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia in connection with his alcohol addiction in early 1982 and committed suicide in March 1982. In addition to the loss of her husband, Eugenia B. Böhlke was threatened with the end of her scientific work. James was the one with the highly paid position, and the couple used his income to fund Eugenia's research. Already in the summer of 1982 she tried to be allowed to continue James' projects. This included in particular the still unfinished work on the volume about the eel-like species of the north-western Atlantic. She was able to obtain funding from the National Science Foundation and recruit several colleagues to do what James left behind. Within six years she not only finished her own contributions, but also coordinated the work of the other authors as editor. In addition, she wrote a catalog of the type specimens in the academy's fish collection and took part in recording the collection using electronic data processing. In 1989 the ninth part of Fishes of the Western North Atlantic could be published.

Eugenia B. Böhlke now turned to the moray eels of the Indo-Pacific . Another application for funding from the National Science Foundation was rejected. Böhlke was forced to make a living as a collection curator with routine work. In her free time she continued to work intensively with the Indo-Pacific moray eels. In 1994, when Böhlke retired, the most productive years of her scientific career began. She could now devote all of her time to researching the moray eels, and she could still use an office at Drexel University . In the following six years she published 14 scientific papers, prepared several other publications and made two trips to natural history museums across Europe.

In 1996 Böhlke had to interrupt her work for half a year because of cancer. A remission the following year gave her the opportunity to continue her work. She fell ill again in early 2000 and died in February of the following year.

Dedication names

The American ichthyologist Kenneth A. Tighe described the genus Boehlkenchelys (Anguilliformes: Chlopsidae ) in 1992 . In the first description of several fish species that were by the authors in memory of Eugenia B. Böhlke specific epithets eugeniae or genie awarded, beginning in 1952 with the naming of the Salmlers Aulixidens eugeniae by James E. Böhlke. There followed the Putzergrundel Elacatinus genie that moray Uropterygius genie who Schlangenaal enjoy Ophichthus and loach Triplophysa eugeniae .

Publications (selection)

Eugenia B. Böhlke was the author or co-author of the first descriptions of a genus ( Monopenchelys ) and another 25 species, especially moray eels. She published a total of 34 works, including several standard works on the taxonomy of eel-like and especially moray eels.
