Sir Ewen Alastair John Fergusson , GCMG , GCVO (born October 28, 1932 in Singapore ; † April 20, 2017 in Vaison-la-Romaine , Département Vaucluse , France ) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to South Africa from 1982 to 1984 , was Deputy Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1984 to 1987 and Ambassador to France from 1987 to 1993 .

Life

Ewen Alastair John Fergusson was the son of Sir Ewen Macgregor Field Fergusson, who was the mining director and general manager of the Singapore- based Straits Trading Company , and his wife, Winifred Evelyn Bagnall. He himself began after visiting the renowned founded in 1567 Rugby School studying at Oriel College of the University of Oxford . There he played rugby and in 1954 also belonged to the Scottish Rugby Union national team , for which he played five international matches as a second-row striker (Lock) . He then served from 1954 to 1956 in the King's Royal Rifle Corps Rifle Infantry Regiment and was last promoted to lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) . In 1956 he entered the diplomatic service (HM Diplomatic Service) Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Foreign Office ) and found in the subsequent period numerous uses of representations abroad and in the foreign ministry.

Fergusson was Counselor and Chancellor at the Permanent Mission to the European Economic Community (EEC) between 1972 and 1975 . From 1975 to 1978 he was Principal Private Secretary to Foreign Secretary James Callaghan (1975 to 1976), Anthony Crosland (1976 to 1977) and, most recently, of David Owen (1977 to 1978). He then stayed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he served as Assistant Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Europe between 1978 and 1982 . In 1982 he replaced John Leahy as ambassador to South Africa and remained in this post until he was replaced by Patrick Moberly in 1984.

Upon his return, Ewen Fergusson became Deputy Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Middle East and Africa in 1984 and held this position until 1987. In 1987 he became Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) and has since had the addition of Sir . Most recently, in 1987, he succeeded Sir John Fretwell as ambassador to France and held this post until he retired in 1993, whereupon Sir Christopher Mallaby succeeded him there. In 1992 he was made the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) and in 1993 he was also raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG).

After his retirement, Sir Ewen Fergusson was CEO of the private bank Coutts & Co from 1993 to 1999 and of the Savoy Hotel Group from 1994 to 1998 . He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Rugby School between 1995 and 2002 and as trustee of the National Gallery . At the same time he held from 1996 to 2007 the Office of the crest King (King of Arms) of the Order of St Michael and St George .

Fergusson married Sara Carolyn Lennox, daughter of Brigadier General Lord Esmé Gordon Lennox, son of Charles Gordon-Lennox, 7th Duke of Richmond , and his second wife Rosamond Lorys Palmer, whose father was Vice Admiral Norman Craig Palmer, on December 19, 1959 . From this marriage the three children Anna Rosamund Harriot, Ewen Alexander Nicholas and Iona Frances Fergusson were born.
