Evgeni Boschanow ( Bulgarian Евгени Божанов , English transcription Evgeni Bozhanov ; born March 10, 1984 in Russe , Bulgaria ) is a Bulgarian pianist .

Life

education

Boschanow received his first piano lessons at the age of six and became a student of the national art school “Prof. Weselin Stojanow ”in Russe. After a master class with Boris Bloch , he decided in 2001 to continue studying music at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and also to take regular master classes with Dmitri Bashkirow . In 2006 he continued his piano studies as a student of Georg Friedrich Schenck at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf . In January 2016 he passed his concert exam there.

Career

Boschanow made his debut in his hometown at the age of 12, won his first piano competitions and received scholarships as a result, which enabled him to take masterclasses and finally to study piano with Bloch and then with Schenck at the age of 16. Through his continued concert activity during his student years, mainly as a chamber musician , but also as a soloist with various orchestras, he became increasingly known to the concert audience.

Participation in piano competitions eventually established him on international concert stages. His 4th place in the 2010 Chopin Competition in Warsaw caused a sensation. Boschanow was considered to be the “eccentric” darling of music critics and the public during the scandalous competition - the rules of which were changed regarding the award of points during the ongoing competition. Like Glenn Gould, Boschanow prefers a very low seating position at the piano. He therefore travels and gives concerts with his own piano stool. Boschanow's striking facial expressions and gestures at concerts are sometimes described extravagantly. This peculiarity and the fact that he was not voted one of the first places by the jury did not affect his career. On the contrary: invitations to international piano festivals followed. Among other things, Boschanow opened the Chopin Festival in Warsaw in 2011 with a recital that was later published under the name Evgeni Bozhanov - Live in Warsaw .

In the 2011/12 season, Boschanow made his debut at the concert halls Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Berlin Philharmonie , the Wiener Musikverein , the Royal Festival Hall in London and the Tonhalle Düsseldorf . Concert tours with the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin under Yutaka Sado took him to Japan. This was followed by a European tour with the Orchestra Nazionale della RAI under Juraj Valčuha.

Boschanow in 2011 for his first release Fréderic Chopin: Piano Works with the Prize of the German Record Critics' Award. In the laudation, the jury honored the pianist's recording with the words: “Evgeny Bozhanov is not only able to interpret Chopin's works, he inhales them, senses what is special in them and what is undiscovered in many passages - a rare synthesis of research Cleverness and momentary happiness in the sense of well-founded spontaneity.
