The political landscape of the Faroe Islands not only differentiates between left (Social Democrats, Republicans) and right (People's Party, Center Party, Unionists), but across the board again between support for the imperial community with Denmark (especially unionists and social democrats) and detachment (especially republicans and People's Party).
Since 2005/06 there has been a rift through all camps regarding the legal equality of homosexuals , a dividing line between Christian fundamental and secular liberal. For example, while the leaders of the Republicans, Unionists and Social Democrats advocated liberalization, the party people raged and prominent members left their parties in protest. In 2008 the Christian Center Party questioned the continued existence of the coalition with Social Democrats and Republicans. There was a scandal that also attracted international attention in 2010 when several politicians stayed away from an official lunch with the openly lesbian Icelandic Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir .
