The Fördergemeinschaft der paraplegten Deutschlands e. V. (FGQ) is a non-profit association promoting the interests of paraplegics and implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Germany.

history

The organization for the handicapped was founded in 1981 by Christian Joachimi as a “support group for paraplegics” , initially mainly to “give start-up help in individual cases” where other help is not sufficient. In 1990, the FGQ initiated the establishment of the German Paraplegia Foundation , which is primarily committed to basic research .

tasks

The association's task is to improve the living situation of people with paraplegia, also in cooperation with other private or public institutions

  • public relation
  • Information and counseling activities: those affected advise those affected ( peer counseling ). The aim is to have a contact person at home during the process of leaving the clinic to get used to everyday life, who can give impulses for the reorientation and is an example for a future perspective. This advisory activity is limited in time.
  • Support for those in need
  • The association operates so-called starting point apartments for the purpose of reintegrating freshly paraplegic people.

Trade journal

The organ of the sponsorship association has been the magazine PARAlife! Journal for a life without barriers (medical future Verlag). It appears quarterly, for members of the association the subscription is included in the membership fee. It contains information about club activities as well as topics that affect disabled people in general and physically disabled people in particular. PARAlife! replaces the magazine PARAplegiker , which appeared until 2014. All issues of PARAplegiker are still available in the archive and can be accessed online.

Working groups

The association has founded working groups (ARGE), which deal with the most urgent concerns of people with paraplegia and work out solutions to problems.

ARGE outpatient services

The ARGE Outpatient Services advises those affected on the benefits of the various cost carriers (health and long-term care insurance funds, social welfare funds, etc.) and gives advice on the organization of home care. It offers support in making contacts with public authorities, social services, legal services, etc. and advocates the concerns of disabled people at the state and federal level (e.g. on questions of statutory amendments to cost structures, employer models in individual care for the severely disabled, assistance)

ARGE Building and Environment

ARGE Bauen und Umwelt is concerned with the collection, processing and dissemination of specialist information on barrier-free construction or planning and the associated environmental design (regardless of the type of disability) and intervenes, if necessary, in public construction projects. Topic-related questions from those affected and interested (for whatever reasons) should and will be answered as far as possible.

ARGE public relations

The ARGE public relations offers support for information and advice activities of those affected with the help of information material. It ensures the publication of specialist information in order to bring the topic of paraplegia into the public eye, to create awareness for the problems of people with paraplegia and to counter prejudices. She is also active in attracting new members and supporters and informs about the use of the donations.

ARGE School & Studies

The ARGE Schule & Studium has put together a package with general and up-to-date information on the education system in Germany based on, among other things, the publications of the relevant federal ministries, the Conference of Ministers of Education, the relevant state ministries of the respective federal states and the respective social payers. In addition, the ARGE employees are personally available for advice, information and experience exchange.

ARGE legal advisor in questions of social law

The legal counsel Herbert Müller advised members of the FGQ and represented them on a voluntary basis in questions of social law and supported the solution of the respective problem by referring suitable specialists. He died in July 2016. This task of coordinating and referring to suitable specialists is now taken over by ARGE Legal and Social Affairs.

ARGE law

ARGE Recht provides information to those affected about the legal aspects of paraplegia and provides initial assistance on the way to enforcing their rights.

ARGE vacation

ARGE Urlaub is committed to improving travel and vacation opportunities for people with reduced mobility.

ARGE barrier-free living

Offer of free housing advice throughout Germany for people who need information and advice who have their housing situation due to physical limitations, e. B. need to change paraplegia. This online consultation includes support in the search for aids for the apartment, suggestions for apartment conversion or apartment adaptation, as well as reviewing plans for barrier-free house construction.

Support network

The support group for paraplegics is active nationwide. Instead of the usual subdivision into state, district, local or other associations, the FGQ has set up support points at all initial treatment centers for paraplegics.

Support points (selection):

Peer counseling

The FGQ regularly trains peers for use in the clinics. The peer has a bridging function in the process of leaving the clinic and getting used to everyday life at home. It gives impulses for an active life in a wheelchair. The support group has designed a peer counseling concept with the aim of being a contact person and providing impetus for reorientation. The peer is therefore a FGQ trained contact person at the clinic who, if requested, makes initial contact with the patient. As a mediator, the peer makes requests for “fellow sufferers” who have the same interests or have to solve similar problems, e.g. B. hunter to hunter, mother to mother, teacher to teacher, etc. In this way the patient is supported to form a personal network and the mediating peer withdraws as a consultant after the agreed time.
