The Föritzau nature reserve is located in the municipality of Mitwitz in the Upper Franconian district of Kronach in Bavaria .

The 59.6 ha area with the number NSG-00508.01, which was placed under nature protection in 1980 , extends north of the core town of Mitwitz along the Föritz . The border with Thuringia runs along the northern and northeastern edge of the area .

It is a floodplain with bordering wetlands , silted ponds and former gravel pits with specific animal and plant communities , especially fish , mussels and dragonflies .
