FAX + 49-69 / 450464 or Fax Records for short was a German music label that was operated by producer Peter Kuhlmann until his death in November 2012.

The label mainly served as a platform for Kuhlmann's own works in the fields of ambient and techno . Well over 500 different albums and singles were released on Fax and the affiliated sub-labels. In addition to the label founder's solo albums, there were also numerous collaborations between Kuhlmann and musicians such as Uwe Schmidt , Pascal Dardoufas , Sylvie Marks , Mixmaster Morris , Maik Maurice Diehl , Klaus Schulze , David Moufang , Martin Schopf , Robert Görl , Peter Prochir , Karl Berger , Dag Lerner , Wolfram Spyra , Gabriel Le Mar , Geir Jenssen or Richie Hawtin . In addition, albums by the artists Bill Laswell , Tetsu Inoue , Jochem Paap , Anthony Rother , Steve Stoll , Thomas P. Heckmann , Oskar Sala and The Higher Intelligence Agency have been released.

history

The label was founded in 1992 by Kuhlmann in Frankfurt. The label name represents the fax number from the contact address of the label.

The first release was the 12 ″ single True Colors of the house project of the same name on October 12, 1992, which , in addition to Kuhlmann, consisted of Pascal Dardoufas and Hans Jörg Nonn . From the beginning, Kuhlmann ensured an extremely high output, often several singles per week. After criticism of this release strategy from Sven Väth , among others , who accused Kuhlmann of “destroying the music”, the frequency of the releases was reduced somewhat.

In the first two years mostly singles appeared. After the release of the album Air II in 1994, the focus shifted to the production of complete albums in CD format, which were limited to 1000 copies.

Not least because of the strong limitation, the plates are extremely popular among collectors and achieve prices of up to 230 euros on eBay, for example.

In 1997 the label and studio moved from Frankfurt-Bornheim to Traben-Trarbach in Rhineland-Palatinate . However, Kuhlmann still saw Fax as a “Frankfurt label”.
