The specialist group on water hazards (FGr W) as a specialist group of the THW saves people, animals and harbors property in the event of water hazards. It works together with other emergency services to supply the population. It transports loads of various types for use or during evacuations. It operates multi-purpose watercraft on the water, builds floating work platforms and jetties for various work on and on the water. It also helps to secure dams and dikes. There are currently 132 of these specialist groups spread across Germany.

The specialist group on water hazards exists as type A and type B.

Type A focuses on working with multi-purpose work boats , while type B also uses multi-purpose pontoons and erects jetties , temporary bridges and work platforms . The groups also differ accordingly in terms of training.

Tasks of the individual functions:

Group leader water hazards (GrFü W)

The group leader is responsible for the personnel and material readiness of his group. He participates in the creation of duty and training plans for the specialist group on water hazards. The group leader instructs the helpers in his specialist group on how to cope with operational tasks and advises the platoon leader / operations manager, in particular on questions relating to the specialist knowledge of his group.

Squad Leader Water Hazards (TrFü W)

The squad leader leads the helpers of his squad and instructs them professionally to cope with operational tasks that correspond to the technical orientation and tasks of the group, and to provide general support to other units, facilities and organizations. This includes the creation and maintenance of connections to higher-level and subordinate bodies.

Boat operator (BoFü W)

During operations and training, the boat operator guides the boat in accordance with regulations and laws. He is responsible for monitoring the traffic and operational safety of the watercraft and ensures compliance with the inspection deadlines. For this purpose, the helper completes the courses "boat guide basics", "boat guide inland" alternative, "boat guide lake" and to supplement regularly "training BoFü Binnen / See".

Ferry Guide (FäFü W)

During operations and training, the boat operator guides the floating work platforms (with and without access ramp) / pontoons in accordance with regulations and laws. He is responsible for monitoring the traffic and operational safety of the watercraft and ensures compliance with the inspection deadlines. The training to become a ferry driver includes all courses that are necessary for the boat driver as well as the course "Construction and driver training of a work platform (Spec 48)".

Loading crane operator (LKrFü W)

The loading crane operator operates the loading crane in accordance with regulations and laws. He is responsible for monitoring the traffic and operational safety of the crane and ensures compliance with the inspection deadlines. He needs the "loading crane operator" course. Even if many loading crane operators have completed the "Driver I" and Driver II "training courses, these are not absolutely necessary in order to operate the loading crane.

Driver CE (KF CE)

He drives and looks after the specialist group's emergency vehicle. This not only includes proper and safety-conscious driving in action, but also caring for the vehicle, monitoring the inspection periods and taking measures to preserve materials and care. The prerequisites for becoming a driver are a CE driving license and a two-part "area driver training".

Radiotelephone operator (SprFu)

The radio operator is responsible for exchanging information via radio. He sets up radio stations and maintains the radio links of his subunit. He also ensures the serviceable condition of the devices. In order to fulfill this position, the helper completes the "Radiotelephony area training".

Paramedic (SanHe)

In the event of minor injuries, the " Sanhelfer " will provide relief. He carries out first aid measures and can take over the medical service when working on slightly injured people. He also ensures that the medical equipment of the specialist group is complete and usable. He attains his qualification through the "area training for paramedics ", which he supplements with regular refresher courses.
