biography

Daniel Sluga was born on October 8, 1971 in Cologne as the child of a German-Italian marriage. Inspired by American hip-hop , Sluga began experimenting with sample-based music in the mid-1980s. Self-taught, he learned to use turntables and electronic instruments and founded the group CUS together with the rappers D-Tex-Law and Imperator under his stage name Fader Gladiator at the end of the 1980s

Dissatisfied with the willingness of the then established music publishers to release German hip-hop albums, Sluga founded the Blitz Vinyl label with his producer colleague Future Rock from the group LSD and others . The two set up a joint production studio in Cologne under the name Blitz Labor and in 1992 released Mind Expansion / Unique Style as one of the first hip-hop records in Germany as a split single from their groups CUS and LSD.

Fader Gladiator now worked as a producer for various artists. For example, he produced the album International Dope Dealers for New York's MC KAOS and worked on publications by the hip-hop crew Äi-Tiem and MC Rene . On the album Blitz Mob - The Organization , artists and groups from the Fader Gladiator environment finally came together and a project emerged in which, in addition to Fader Gladiator, other producers and artists from four countries worked.

After the Blitz Mob label was given up, Daniel Sluga founded the LaCosaMia label ; but he continued to work in the shared Blitz laboratory . With Der Profi , Fader Gladiator released his first solo album on pornoprofan records , which consists almost exclusively of instrumental beats. With The Kiss of Death it was also the first song of the newly founded group Die Firma , in which Fader Gladiator worked as a producer. Die Firma's debut album, Game of Life / Game of Death , was released in 1998 and is one of the best-selling independent hip-hop releases from Germany. In 1999 the second album by his band Die Firma was released and reached number 8 on the Media Control Album Charts and was a commercial success with a total of 100,000 records.

In addition to his work at Die Firma, Sluga produced for other artists on his label LaCosaMia ; But his productions also include works for other labels such as 3P . In 2001 he released his second solo album, Der Innere Kreis , on which artists from the old label Blitz Vinyl u. a. also flowin Realty was represented. The following year, Hits & Raritäten was released, a best-of album containing songs from all phases of Daniel Sluga's career. In 2002, his band was nominated for the Echo music award for the album The Third Eye .

In 2005 Sluga received gold and platinum awards in Germany and Austria for the song Die Eine 2005 , as well as further nominations for the 1 Live Krone and the Bravo Otto . In the same year he founded the music publisher Edition La Cosa Mia , which he runs together with the publisher Melodie der Welt . Numerous other music productions for various projects followed by 2010, including a. two more albums from Die Firma. In the following years he concentrated increasingly on management and consulting activities in the music sector.

Sluga later made music videos for u. a. Ali As , Namika , Olli Banjo and Wunderkynd, he worked with Art Davis and Daniel Zlotin .

style

In the early 1990s, Fader Gladiator mainly produced sample-based beats, and since the late 1990s he has increasingly been using electronic musical instruments or live musicians in his productions. The production The sixth chapter (2010) he recorded completely with a symphony orchestra.

What is striking about the works of Fader Gladiator is the visual quality of the production. Likewise, he cannot be tied to just one style and often changes the musical moods of his productions. So he produces reserved / relaxed songs such as B. the principle of luck , but also more aggressive songs like shit on the hookline or sentimental pieces like no end in sight .

In some of his productions, the artwork is based on movie posters. In addition to the records of his group Die Firma, this also applies to his solo albums and earlier projects. The artwork of his solo album Der Innere Kreis is similar in design to film posters from the thriller, gangster and action films of the 1960s and 1970s. “I always develop concepts for this,” replied Fader Gladiator when asked about the idea for the cover of Der Innere Kreis (album from 2001). “It's kind of a sixties style. Another idea was that I wanted to be painted like Conan the Barbarian . "
