The Faloppia is a 9-kilometer right tributary of the Breggia in the Italian province of Como and in the Swiss canton of Ticino . The course of the river is 5.7 kilometers in Italy and 4.7 kilometers in Switzerland.

course

The Faloppia is created at about 330  m slm by the confluence of two short source streams in a small forest area. The streams unite directly on the municipal boundary of Faloppio and Uggiate-Trevano between the Gaggino in the south and Trevano in the north.

After a short walk to the northeast, it curves to the south. It flows past a gravel pit a little east of Gaggino , after which it runs entirely on the municipality of Faloppio. The Faloppia passes Camnago Faloppia and turns again to the northeast. At Filatoio it again briefly forms the border between Uggiate-Trevano and Faloppio, before it forms that between Uggiate-Trevano on the left bank and Colverde at the Drezzo fraction on the right bank. This is followed on the left bank by the municipality of Ronago , in which it briefly runs completely before the river forms the border between Italy and Switzerland at the level of the municipality of Chiasso .

The Faloppia flows north-northeast, passing the Fornace fraction . At Resiga, the river curves to the east and completely crosses the state border with Switzerland. The now canalised Faloppia also briefly forms the municipal boundary between Novazzano on the left and Chiasso on the right bank. From the left it takes on its most important tributary, the Motta, which is about the same size , after which the confluence on the left bank follows the municipality of Balerna .

It flows along the northern slope of the wooded Collina del Penz , from which several short streams arise that feed the Faloppia. From the left, the river flows into the Riale di Balerna , which passes under the Chiasso freight station , which is adjacent to the left bank . Its tracks bridge the river at Guasto , while at the same time it crosses the municipal boundary and now runs entirely in the municipality of Chiasso.

It crosses Chiasso and turns north-east just before the state border, passing under the Chiasso – Milan railway line and part of Chiasso. Shortly after the A2 and just before the estuary, the Faloppia comes to the surface again. Finally it flows only about 5 meters west of the border with Italy at 226  m above sea level. M. from the right into the breggia.
