Famciclovir is an analogue of the nucleobase 2-aminopurine and is used as an antiviral agent for infections and reactivation of herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and -2) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV).

chemistry

Famciclovir is the di acetyl - derivative of penciclovir which, after oral sufficient ingestion bioavailability achieved. This made it necessary to develop a substance with better pharmacokinetics .

pharmacology

Famciclovir is a prodrug of penciclovir that is metabolized after oral ingestion and is converted to penciclovir by deacetylation and subsequent oxidation .

application

The active ingredient is used as a relapse for the treatment of genital herpes or for the early treatment of herpes zoster ("shingles"). In combination with lamivudine , famciclovir has also been used in studies to replace combination interferon therapy in chronic hepatitis B infection. This has become obsolete since the availability of specific antivirals against the hepatitis B virus.
