The colored catchwort ( Silene colorata ) is a type of plant from the genus catchweed ( Silene ) within the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae).

The colored catchwort is a prostrate, ascending or upright, branched, finely hairy and annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 50 centimeters. The simple and hairy leaves are opposite. The lower leaves are stalked and obovate to spatulate, the upper ones are sessile and obovate to linear
The flowering period extends from April to June. In a one-sided inflorescence there are three to six five-fold flowers with a double inflorescence . The calyx is 11 to 17 millimeters in size and longer than the stems of the flowers. It is long-haired and ten-nerved, ribbed, has densely lashed and short, rounded-pointed teeth and is broad-club-shaped at the time of fruiting and not contracted at its tip. The five obovate petals are 1 to 2 centimeters long, bright pink or white and deeply divided and often curled at the tip. The secondary crown with bilobed scales is whitish. There are three styluses . The small, club-shaped capsule fruit is 5 to 9 millimeters in size, six-toothed and stalked with a 5 to 7 millimeter long fruit carrier . The flattened and brown seeds are kidney-shaped with a minimally two-winged, furrowed edge.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Distribution and systematics
Silene colorata is common in the Mediterranean area , the Canary Islands and Southwest Asia. The species grows on sandy beaches and cultivated land.
The first description was in 1789 by Jean Louis Marie Poiret . The specific epithet coloratus means (Latin colorata ) colored, colored.
The following subspecies are distinguished:
- Silene colorata subsp. amphorina (Pomel) Batt. : It only occurs in Algeria .
- Silene colorata Poir. subsp. colorata : It is found in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Sardinia, Sicily, Malta, Albania, Greece, Crete, in the Aegean, in European and Asian Turkey, in Cyprus and in the area of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel before.
- Silene colorata subsp. morisiana (Bég. & Ravano) Pignatti : She is endemic to Sardinia .
- Silene colorata subsp. oliveriana (Otth) Rohrb. : It occurs in North Africa , Cyprus and the Middle East .
