Federico Bigi

Federico Bigi (born March 21, 1920 in Reggio nell'Emilia ; † April 24, 1996 ) was a politician of the Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese (PDCS) from San Marino , who was San Marino's foreign minister between 1957 and 1972 . He was also President of the National Olympic Committee ( Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Sammarinese ) from 1959 to 1969 and again from 1973 to 1978, and from 1991 to his death in 1996 as the first Sanmarinese judge at the European Court of Human Rights .

Life

Bigi graduated from the University of Bologna and the University of Urbino . After the end of fascism , he was appointed member of the 1st Cabinet and its Congress for Ordinary Administration (Congresso per l'ordinaria amministrazione) from July 28 to September 16, 1943 . He was later a member of the 4th and 5th Cabinet between October 23, 1944 and March 24, 1945 . In the 8th Cabinet he served from June 30 to September 23, 1951 as Minister of the Interior (Segretario degli Interni) . After the clashes in Rovereta (Fatti di Rovereta) , he became a member of the Provisional Government together with Alvaro Casali , Pietro Giancecchi and Zaccaria Giovanni Savoretti on October 1, 1957, which was in office until October 23, 1957. Subsequently, on October 23, 1957, he became the first foreign minister of San Marino in the 11th cabinet (Segretario di Stato per gli Affari Esteri e Politici) and held this office in the 12th , 13th , 14th and 15th cabinet until his resignation in the October 1971, after which Giancarlo Ghironzi became his successor on January 17, 1972.

In 1959 he was elected as a top candidate for a member of the Grand and General Council ( Consiglio Grande e Generale ) , to which he belonged in the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th , 20th , 21st and 22nd legislative periods until 1993. In 1959 he was also a co-founder of the National Olympic Committee ( Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Sammarinese ) and was first President of the CONS from 1959 until he was replaced by Giuseppe Micheloni in 1969.

From December 12, 1961 to November 6, 1969, Bigi was also Minister of Industry (Deputato per l'Industria) in the twelfth to fourteenth cabinet . In the 16th cabinet he held the office of Minister for Tourism, Sports and Events (Deputato per il Turismo, lo Sport e lo Spettacolo) from March 27, 1973 to November 11, 1974 . In 1973 he succeeded Giuseppe Micheloni as President of the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Sammarinese for the second time and held this position for another five years until he was replaced by Libero Barulli in 1978. In the 17th Cabinet he served between November 11, 1974 and March 11, 1976 as Minister of Tourism and Sports and as Minister of Justice (Deputato per il Turismo, lo Sport e la Giustizia) , while he was in the 18th Cabinet from March 11th 1976 to July 17, 1978 was again Minister for Tourism, Sports and Events.

In 1991 Bigi became the first Sanmarinese judge at the European Court of Human Rights , of which he was a member until his death on April 24, 1996.
