After graduating from high school, Felix Bürgers completed an apprenticeship as a businessman and then worked in the Amsterdam office of his father's tobacco factory. At the age of 30 he became seriously ill. His doctor advised him to change his profession. In accordance with his talent and inclination, Bürgers turned to painting . He studied in Stuttgart with Otto Reininger and in Karlsruhe with Ludwig Schmid-Reutte . In Schmid-Reuttes' studio he met his wife, the painter Gertrud Laurenz from Hanover . The marriage was concluded in 1904 in Dachau, where Felix Bürgers had moved in 1900.

Her house at Herzog-Albrecht-Strasse 1 (now 12) was a meeting place for many artists. Felix Bürgers was an avid nature lover. He planted the property surrounding his villa with rare flowering perennials, which he used as models for his flower paintings, and other plants. He also built a large alpine plant and grew roses. Today there is a dormitory for people with disabilities on the property, the villa is in private hands.

In Dachau, Felix Bürgers deepened his studies with Adolf Hölzel , the exponent of the Dachau School . He and his wife were co-founders of the Dachau artist group , the painter also belonged to the Munich artist society Allotria and was a (jury) member of the Munich Secession , which exhibited some of his works in the Munich Glass Palace on his 60th birthday . In the fire there in 1931, an entire collection of his paintings was irretrievably destroyed.

The artist often stayed in Murnau am Staffelsee , in the area of Staltach an den Osterseen , in South Tyrol and in Switzerland , where many of his lake and mountain landscapes were created.

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, a large exhibition was held in Dachau Castle , for which the artist's son, Hannes Bürgers, was responsible. Some of his works can be viewed in the Dachau painting gallery ; one street in the city is named after the artist.
