from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Felix Kubin , actually Felix Knoth (* 1969 in Hamburg ) is a German musician , composer and radio play maker . He runs the record label Gagarin Records.

Life

Felix Kubin began his music career at the age of eight on the piano and electronic organ . From 1992 to 1996 he studied drawing , sound installation , video and animation film at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences , department of design. In 1995 he was doing a one-year DAAD study abroad in the Media Art Department of the AKI art school in Enschede , Netherlands .

In 1981, at the age of twelve, he recorded his first own pieces with synthesizer , organ , voice and drum computer . Two years later, one of the first 4-track cassette recorders was added. From 1983 he performed live with Stefan Mohr under the name "Die Egozentrischen 2". He was discovered early on by the Hamburg label operator and impresario Alfred Hilsberg ( ZickZack Records ), who arranged for him to perform various times, for example in 1984 in the Hamburg market hall at the “In der Wärme der Nacht” festival. Some home recording recordings from this period were a. documented on the compilation "The Tetchy Teenage Tapes of Felix Kubin 1981–1985".

In the 1990s, Kubin began to experiment with music made from noises and released several albums with his band "Klangkrieg". From 1992 to 1994 he was a member of the Dada communist singing group "Liedertafel Margot Honecker". At the same time as he founded his record label Gagarin Records in 1998, he turned back to avant-garde pop. In the following years he expanded his artistic spectrum through lecture performances and contemporary compositions for chamber orchestra and electronics.

In addition to numerous recordings, workshops and lectures at home and abroad, Felix Kubin wrote music for films and theater productions. In addition, played at over 100 international music and media art festivals, including Sónar , Mutek , Incubate , Wien Modern and Ars Electronica .

In 2010 his live concert "Echohaus" for six rooms, headphone ensemble and electronics in cooperation with the "ensemble Intégrales" was premiered at the MaerzMusik Festival in Berlin. In 2013 and 2015 the commissioned compositions "Chromdioxidgedächtnis" and "Takt der Arbeit" followed for the series NDR das neue werk . In 2016 Kubin's 70-minute orchestral piece "Falling still" for boys' choir, string ensemble, electronics and percussion premiered at the 2nd Hamburg International Music Festival.

Genre

In Felix Kubin's music, influences from the Neue Deutsche Welle (NDW), contemporary classical music and film music of the 20th century can be seen. He often uses analog synthesizers . A clear closeness to the Neue Deutsche Welle is also evident in his surrealist German texts, which are wild, poetic and open to meaning.

However, Kubin was too young to actively participate in the development of the early NDW.

Radio plays

Since 2001 Felix Kubin has been producing radio reports between radio plays and features . They can be divided into three categories:

  • Radio plays that condense documentary recordings with studio recordings in a fictional framework and thus go beyond the classic feature. ( Paralektronoia , repeat 1-8 , Syndicate for counter-noise , Mother in the fridge )
  • Dramatic radio plays (selection)
    • Orpheus ' psycotron . After Dino Buzzati . With Lars Rudolph , Traugott Buhre , Marlen Diekhoff , Leéna Fahje u. a. Music recordings: Ensemble Intégrales, composition: Felix Kubin / Burkhard Friedrich, realization: Felix Kubin, production: BR radio play and media art 2006.
    • Orphée Mécanique . Content: Orpheus, son of an inventor and a singer, is celebrated by scattered youth for his eccentric concerts. His instrument, the psykotron, can transform streams of thought directly into electronic signals from music, noises and language. Radio play with Lars Rudolph , Gerhard Garbers, Yvon Jansen, Charlotte Crome, Traugott Buhre , Marlen Diekhoff. Choir: Yvon Jansen, Leéna Fahje, Nikola Duric. Orchestra: ensemble Intégrales. Composition and realization: Felix Kubin. Production: BR radio play and media art 2006/2012. As a podcast / download in the BR radio play pool.
  • Sound art ( night storage , territorial territory , infant shower head, lady's steps , phantom power )

For example, the radio opera Repeat 1-8 appears like an “instruction manual for the technological world”, in which instructions from building a cupboard to using a telephone receiver to autosuggestion cassettes give an idea of how bad language actually works as a communication tool.

Film and theater music

In recent years Kubin has worked in the theater with artists such as Christoph Schlingensief ("Atta Atta", Volksbühne Berlin , 2003), Mariola Brillowska ("House of National Dog", Kampnagel Hamburg, 2007), Schorsch Cameroon ("Hollywood Elegien") , Ruhrtriennale Essen, 2002) and Branco Simic (“Zufall”, Kampnagel Hamburg, 2003). He composed film music for animated films by Mariola Brillowska, Anke Feuchtenberger and Martha Colburn . He also wrote scripts for “propaganda films” for the Dada communist art party KED (Communist Unity Party of Germany) and produced his own short films that were shown at international festivals and on foreign television.

In 2007 his performance piece on operating instructions "I want upwards, I want downwards" premiered in the Tanzquartier Wien .
