Felonica is a fraction of the Italian municipality ( comune ) Sermide e Felonica in the province of Mantua ( Lombardy region ).
geography
The place is located about 50 kilometers east-southeast of Mantua on the orographic right bank of the Po and borders on the provinces of Ferrara ( Emilia-Romagna ) and Rovigo ( Veneto ).
history
The history of the place is closely linked to the Benedictine Abbey of S. Maria Assunta, first mentioned in a document in 944. The founding of the abbey was attributed to Mathilde von Canossa in the past , but it happened earlier. Under Mathilde von Canossa the importance of the abbey increased significantly. The abbey began to decline slowly in the 14th century, and in the 18th century it was finally closed and turned into a farm. Only the monastery church continued to serve as the local parish church. During the Second World War, the abbey buildings that still exist were destroyed in air raids in 1944. In the final phase of the Second World War, parts of Army Group C of the German Wehrmacht, which had been defeated near Bologna during the Allied spring offensive in 1945, crossed the Po at Felonica .
Felonica was an independent municipality until February 2017 and merged with the municipality of Sermide on March 1, 2017 to form the new municipality of Sermide e Felonica. The district of Quatrelle still belonged to the municipality of Felonica.
