The rock head is with a height of 2,835 meters, the fourth highest mountain in the Rätikon , a mountain range in the central eastern Alps and belongs to Schesaplanagruppe . The survey point of the summit is in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg , the border with the Swiss canton of Graubünden runs about 500 meters to the southwest.
The rock head is part of a ridge that runs from the Schesaplana ( 2964 m ) in a north-easterly direction. The mountain is not particularly dominant; first ascents from the first and second epochs of the opening of the Alps from the 19th century are not recorded.
Surroundings
The Felsenkopf belongs to the Schesaplana group and lies in the northeast ridge , which stretches from the Schesaplana over a length of over three kilometers to the north bank of the Lünersee (water level at 1970 meters). On the northwest side of the mountain, the Brandner Ferner , the only significant glacier in the Rätikon, stretches up to an altitude of 2700 meters. In the southwest is the Dead Alpe , also called Totalp , a former glacier, the rest of which is the Lünersee. Neighboring mountains are the Schesaplana, 500 meters away as the crow flies , in the west and the 2805 meter high Zirmenkopf in the northeast . The next significant settlements are in the north-westerly direction the Nenzinger Himmel in the Gamperdonatal , six kilometers, in the north-east Brand in the Brandner Tal , 5 km (both in Vorarlberg) and in the south, a good 6 kilometers away, the Graubündner Schuders (a fraction of the municipality of Schiers ).
Bases and paths
The easiest ways ( normal routes ) to the rock head lead from the north and west to the summit. The routes run as an easy glacier tour , only to be climbed with appropriate equipment and experience, from the Mannheimer Hütte at 2679 meters above the Brandner Ferner and the debris cones of the northwest flank to the summit. From the south it is possible to climb the Schesaplanasteig over the Dead Alpe. The Totalphütte , located at an altitude of 2381 meters, serves as a base here . From the hut the path runs in a westerly direction over the Tote Alpe to the Schesaplanafürkeli and further over the northeast ridge with easy to moderately difficult climbing in UIAA difficulty levels I to II to the summit.
