The Totalphütte is a refuge of the Vorarlberg section of the Austrian Alpine Club in the Rätikon ( Vorarlberg ). It is located at an altitude of 2385 meters on the ascent from Lünersee to Schesaplana . The hut has been awarded the environmental quality seal of the German and Austrian Alpine Club.

history

It all began in a former building barrack owned by Vorarlberger Illwerke AG , when it was drilling a water transfer tunnel from the Brandner Glacier to the Totalpsee through the ridge north of the hut, between Zirmenkopf (2805 m) and Seekopf (2698 m) for the Lünerseewerk that went into operation in 1958 . After the barracks had become obsolete and the Illwerke planned to be demolished, it was taken over by the PES, converted and from 1964 onwards managed on a trial basis. In 1973/74 a two-storey, dismantled Illwerke residential barracks were transported from the Seebord (natural, northern boundary of the Lünersee) to Totalp by helicopter and the sleeping house (torn away by the avalanche in 2019) was built on the north side of the building barracks. In 1988/89 the building shed was torn down and the southern part of the building with the kitchen and dining room was built in its place. A sewage treatment plant and the material ropeway followed.

After a power cord was pulled to the Totalp, the winter room from the 1988/89 building could be relocated and set up in the diesel generator house a good 50 m south of it. The building from 1988/89 got an extension to the west in place of the outside staircase leading to the former winter room, which among other things made it possible to enlarge the dining room.

Avalanche release in 2019 and reconstruction

In January 2019, the Totalphütte was badly damaged by a dust avalanche . The northern side of the building (sleeping quarters from 1973/74 with recently renovated bedrooms and sanitary rooms) was completely smashed, with the exception of the concrete cellar, so that it was only possible to rescue and demolish the remains. Rescue work had been in progress since mid-February, after tools had been flown in by helicopter and a repair team had been quartered in the southern part of the main building and in the winter room. Massive damage was also caused to the larger, southern part of the building from 1988/89. In order to guarantee operation, this was initially temporarily secured statically with costs in the upper five-digit range, but is so criss-crossed by large cracks and shifted 5 to 10 cm from the foundation that it - contrary to initial estimates, which assumed the wing would be preserved - Also demolished from 23 September 2019 and replaced by a new building by the end of October, on which interior work can then be carried out until wintering. The new house should then be opened in July 2020. The newly constructed buildings are a shed roof , which draws away a possible re outgoing avalanche over the house, are equipped.

Only the extension built about ten years ago on the west gable of the building from 1988/89 was "only" slightly damaged and will be preserved. It is a bit off the main avalanche train line. It is not anchored on a concrete foundation and therefore reacted relatively flexibly to the pressure of the avalanche.

The top pillar of the material ropeway was also buckled. The runway was temporarily repaired so that it could be used again in the summer season. Nevertheless, it is about 30 years old and will be demolished in 2019. A new railway should then also be approved for the transport of employees.

The Vorarlberg PES section now estimates the cost of the reconstruction at 3.1 million euros.

The section installed a webcam, which provides a live image of the construction work every five minutes.

From the end of June 2019, summer operations were severely limited in terms of overnight capacity (only 34 instead of 95 beds). For this purpose, twelve sleeping and two sanitary containers were set up using a helicopter, and the largely usable kitchen and the part of the dining room in the slightly damaged extension were used.

Approach

From the Brandnertal : After climbing from Schattenlagant (valley station of the Lünerseebahn , 1565 m) to Lünersee or using the cable car (mountain station at 1,979 meters), the Totalphütte can be reached on a hiking trail from the mountain station in 1¼ hours.

A very popular tour in the Rätikon leads through the Zalimtal to the Mannheimer Hütte and after crossing the Brandner Glacier (accessible in summer with hiking boots and sticks) to the summit of the Schesaplana (or to bypass the summit via the Südwandsteig ) - with a descent to the Totalphütte and to the Lünersee.

Hospitality

The Totalphütte is open every summer from around mid-June to early October. There was space for approx. 85 in two dining rooms, and there is space for a further 160 guests on the terrace. In 2009, the control system on the hut was renewed and modernized, which is why it could be served very quickly even when it was fully occupied (terrace & dining room are served). A particular challenge at the Totalphütte is the supply and disposal, because there is no road leading to the hut. A basic covering is brought by helicopter before the start of the season. During the season, fresh deliveries are made twice a week by material cable car. The groceries have to be transported up with the Lünerseebahn and then transferred to a small truck that brings the goods on the northwest section of the well-developed Lünerseerundweg to the material ropeway. This leads directly into the cellar of the hut.

The winter room with 10 mattress camps was spared the avalanche in 2019. It is equipped with a € 1 coin machine that enables the mains power supply for lights, hotplates, sockets and heating for 30 minutes per coin.

Currently, the hut is supplied with electricity from the grid and from photovoltaic systems and a small turbine. In the hut you can choose between the energy sources as required or, if energy consumption is high, all sources are used simultaneously. The connection was made near the valley station of the material cable car at 1,990 m.
