action
Lilo Rosenberg's daughter Carolin, who earns her living as a taxi driver , is convinced that her mother would be better off in a senior citizens' residence and is accordingly looking for a suitable home. When her mother hears about this, while her daughter is stopping at a gas station, she gets into the driver's cab of the truck of the Iranian exile Sami at an opportune moment, in order to escape these plans. Lilo, an artist, has a secret: she has terminal cancer , as she has just learned. But Carolin also has considerable problems. On the one hand there is her job, which makes her more and more dissatisfied, and on the other hand her private life, which is slipping away from her more and more. For her husband Andreas, work in his psychotherapeutic practice is the focal point of his life and her son Vincent spends a large part of his time together with his friend Darek in the gym. There was no real conversation between mother and son for a long time.
Lilo got into the truck not without ulterior motives, she hopes that it will take her to a place in her past that she absolutely wants to visit again before she dies and that holds a secret that affects the connection between mother and daughter in the present. Although Sami has to go to Amsterdam first and Hamburg, wherever Lilo wants to go, is only on his program on Friday, Lilo decides to do the tour with him. Sami is a nice guy and mutual affection quickly develops between him and Lilo. After Carolin knows how sick her mother is, she wants to change her life and is determined to go looking for Lilo. Vincent, who found his grandmother's trail on cell phone, goes on a chase with his mother.
When Andreas comes home, he reads Carolin's message on the mirror that she wants a divorce. He takes this as an opportunity to look at old family slides. Early in the morning Darek shows up with him, who is looking for Vincent, and helps him catch Lilo's cat, as Andreas has a cat allergy. When Vincent receives a phone call from Darek that his father is totally confused about his mother's wish for a divorce, he realizes once again how things are with his family, in which they no longer talk to each other. When his mother tries to justify himself, he yells at her, whether she can even notice that he is still there, always saying “I, I, I”. Shortly afterwards, mother and son encounter the truck. Opposing opinions are loudly exchanged. When Vincent wanted to know what Lilo was doing in Hamburg, he heard the name Jule for the first time and was astonished to note that his grandmother reproachfully asks his mother whether she had never told him about Jule. Which in turn leads to an irritable mood between the women. Sami then decides to go straight to Hamburg with his complicated inmates. On the way, the Iranian Vincent asks directly whether it could be that he is gay.
When Vincent explains to his father during a phone call that Sami likes Carolin, Andreas decides to follow his family. During the phone call, he learns from his father that Jule was his mother's sister. Darek, who has joined Andreas, accuses him on the way of not caring enough for his family and, above all, of Vincent needing and not having a family. Then Andreas throws him out of the car.
Before one has even reached Hamburg, a conversation takes place between mother and daughter. Carolin says she was ten years old, she screamed for help, but nobody was there, neither papa nor she, her mom. She asks what she should have done and where Lilo was. "Not there," right, replies Lilo and she just wanted to know why the window was open. Who opened it. "Yes", it was her, says Carolin, she opened the window. The question of whether she might have pushed her sister upset Carolin completely. She runs away crying. A little later, Sami takes her in his arms and finds the right words to soothe Carolin's pain.
After Andreas found his family, Lilo had a breakdown and Andreas and his son had a good conversation, they are on their way to Hamburg. Lilo and Carolin visit Jules grave there, who is only seven years old, and then the house in which they lived at the time. The moment when Jule thought she could fly and jumped out of the window catches up with the women again. Finally Lilo speaks the words of redemption for Carolin that she could not help the death of her sister, that she was not there herself, that she was not paying attention. Five people start the return journey. On the way, Vincent says goodbye, who wants to go to a casting with Darek and finally no longer hides his affection for his boyfriend. When you start your onward journey and Carolin turns to Lilo to ask whether she is so hungry, her mother is dead.

criticism
TV Spielfilm pointed the thumbs up, gave one of three possible points for humor and claim and wrote: “The hidden cancer, unprocessed grief, a troubled marriage, a pending coming-out - the 'Herzkino' wants a lot. The script allows itself a number of platitudes, but also has light moments, and the good ensemble with flying colors overcomes almost all weaknesses. "Conclusion:" Good approaches, threatened by TV flatness. "
Heike Hupertz wrote in the Frankfurter Allgemeine that the ZDF was warming up with the film "a well-tried recipe from the TV kitchen that leaves the viewer cold" - and that "Hannelore Elsner" was "terribly misplaced". “Vacation from life” declines “a movie scenario that one has seen similarly often”. "Always with the same, admittedly grateful role for expressive actresses ( Hannelore Hoger , Christiane Hörbiger and Hannelore Elsner)." Sometimes "such a film is only a vehicle for depicting the complicated mother-daughter relationship". In conclusion, Hupertz concluded: “'Vacation from life' contains individual touching moments, there is little to complain about the actors, but the book heaped cliché building block on cliché building block. And Hannelore Elsner is simply wrongly cast as a farmer's wife. "
Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv awarded 4.5 out of a possible 6 points, had a completely different opinion and wrote that “the makers of the decision to pack the relationship stories of the ZDF tragicomedy 'Ferien vom Leben' into a road movie , can only congratulate “. Tittelbach went on to say: It is the basis for the fact that “Vacation from Life” has become an absolute “Herzkino” highlight. The film tells the heroic journey of two women, but also for a husband, a son and a supposedly cheerful Iranian trucker, this film journey brings decisive existential changes. Genre & story aim at reflection & communication; nevertheless the relationships are not chattered here, the scenes are not chattered. The psychological foundation is right, the humor fits (as an insightful principle) and the ensemble is great, especially Bäumer, who gives her play a cinematic presence.
In the case ofquotemeter.de , the level was 65% approval. Nicole Schmidt wrote: “In keeping with the season, 'Ferien vom Leben' delivers well-known problems packed into a solid and shallow road trip, in which humorous and emotional moments alternate, so that the production never drifts into too serious realms.” The television film makes “the The impression that the producers didn't want to commit themselves 100 percent whether their film was a drama, a comedy or a love story. Ultimately, I am "a mix of all three grenres, which might be too much of a mess for some". Schmidt continued: "'Vacation from life' accordingly paints the picture of a broken family, which is very close to reality and successfully underlines that we often tend to run away from problems and remain silent instead of talking about them." "Navid Navid [...] turned out to be an" absolute popular figure, especially since his figure drawing was successful and deviated from typical stereotypes ". Actually, the ZDF production is at a "high level" anyway. "Above all, Hannelore Elsner and Marie Bäumer" knew "how to convince and manage to portray funny and emotional moments equally plausibly". It is "above all their chemistry that makes the film". "But also the rest of the cast, consisting of Emilo Sakraya, Daniel Axt and Robert Schubb", deliver "a good performance and get what can be got out of their sometimes quite pale figures". In the end, “a light television film that only sheds light on the problems presented, but provides good entertainment and is therefore perfectly suited for a mild late summer evening”.
The review on Kino.de was similarly positive . It was pointed out that Hannelore Elsner had played such roles “regularly” in recent years and that the script also “consists of various set pieces that have already been told in a similar form elsewhere”. But that doesn't matter at all, "because the comedy-experienced director Sophie Allet-Coche made a wonderfully light and beautifully played triple road movie out of the material". "Navid Akhavan, who calls himself Navid Navid as an actor" has the "most beautiful role", because Sami is "an inexhaustible source of Persian calendar sayings" and spreads "with his infectious joie de vivre a mood that characterizes the entire film", whereby "the funny dialogues "are anyway" the best thing about 'vacation from life' ".
The film service found: "A dramatic, exquisitely played, yet tongue-in-cheek (television) road movie that tells a multilayered bittersweet story about the relativity of age."
