Feryal Özel

Feryal Özel (also Feryal Ozel ; born May 27, 1975 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish - American astrophysicist , astronomer and university professor . She was part of the team of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), which received the first images of black holes in April 2017 .

Life

Özel attended the middle and upper grades of the American high school Üsküdar in İstanbul. In 1996 she completed her bachelor's degree in physics and applied mathematics at Columbia University in New York. Özel received her master's degree in physics the following year at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen with a thesis on supersymmetric decays of the Higgs boson elementary particle. In the summer of 1995 she worked at CERN in Geneva. With a dissertation on the effects of strong magnetic and gravitational fields on the atmosphere of neutron stars , she received her doctorate in astrophysics at Harvard University in 2002 .

Before Özel 2005 as an assistant professor at the University of Arizona joined (U of A), she was a postdoc - Fellow of the Hubble -Programms of NASA from 2002 to 2003 at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, New Jersey and from 2003 to In 2004 at the U of A. There she became an associate professor in 2010 before being appointed to a chair in 2015 . Özel teaches astrophysics and astronomy in Tucson .

Özel carried out the first precise measurements of the radii of neutron stars. Based on her work on accretion fluxes , she made the first size predictions of the images of nearby supermassive black holes at different wavelengths . In April 2017, the Event Horizon Telescope team managed to take a picture of a supermassive black hole in the center of the galaxy Messier 87 (M87 or NGC 4486 ), which is 54 million light years away. The object has 6.5 billion solar masses, but is as tiny as a donut on the moon at 50 micro-arcseconds (µas) from Earth . Eight different telescopes were connected and synchronized for the recordings . Previously, it took millions of black hole simulations to design the instruments. Özel had been involved in the photography of these objects since she was a student.

Özel is a regular guest in television documentaries on the PBS network , the History Channel , CNN International and Turkish television. In November 2010, she became the spokesperson for the Louis Vuitton campaign to promote literacy among women in the Middle East .

Özel is married and has two daughters.
