Ferydoon Zandi ( Persian : فریدون زندی [ færiːˈduːn zænˈdiː ]; born April 26, 1979 in Emden ) is a former German-Iranian football player . The attacking midfielder last played for Al-Ahli SC .
Life
Ferydoon Zandi is the son of a German and an Iranian. He grew up bilingual with German and Persian , but according to his own statement, does not speak the latter perfectly.
Career
youth
Zandi played in various German youth national teams, including five times in the U21s. He turned down two appointments to the team in 2006 , because he had hopes of appearances in the Iranian national team that would not have been possible with a mission in the team in 2006. At the same time, he initially rejected inquiries from Iran.
Professional career
Zandi began his professional career at SV Meppen , where he played in the Regionalliga Nord from 1998 to 2000 . He had already played at SVM for six years as a youth.
In 2000 Zandi moved to the first division club SC Freiburg . In the following two seasons, however, he was unable to assert himself and only made ten Bundesliga appearances. After SC Freiburg was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2002, he moved to the also second-rate VfB Lübeck .
In the first half of the 2003/04 season he scored ten goals and showed outstanding performances, which was followed by inquiries from the first division clubs Hannover 96 , 1. FC Kaiserslautern and 1860 Munich, as well as being appointed to the Iranian national team. In the second half of the season he scored four more times, but despite his 14 goals, Lübeck was relegated to the Regionalliga at the end of the season. Zandi then moved to the first division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern on a free transfer.
During the first season at Kaiserslautern (2004/05) he was able to establish himself. He scored six goals in 26 appearances. In the 2005/06 season, however, he was often only on the bench from the start of the season. An eye injury also threw him back: Because a drug he had taken for treatment caused fear of a doping offense, he decided not to take part in the start of the second half of the season in Nuremberg. In the second half of the season, Zandi only made eight appearances, including six substitutions. At the end of the season 1. FCK was relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, and Zandi, whose contract had expired, was left without a club. Zandi took part in the 2006 World Cup with the Iranian team .
In September 2006 he signed a contract with the second division TuS Koblenz until the end of the 2006/07 season. Thrown back by illness, he agreed with the club management during the winter break to terminate his contract and is now playing the second half of the 2006/07 season in Cyprus with Apollon Limassol .
In the preliminary round of the 2007/08 season, Zandi was without a club; He temporarily hit the headlines when an Iranian news agency reported that he had left his previous club after it had signed an Israeli coach. This report was completely unfounded. In the second half of the season he was under contract with Olympiacos Nicosia . In the 2008/09 season Zandi played for Alki Larnaka .
For the 2009/10 season he moved to his father’s homeland, Iran , to Azin Steel Tehran . For the 2011/12 season he moved from Azin Steel Tehran to Esteghlal Tehran and won the Hazfi Cup with them in March 2012 . In the summer of 2012, the EU and US sanctions due to the Iranian nuclear program led to an economic crisis, which is why many foreign players could no longer be paid.
At the end of September 2012, Zandi therefore moved to the Qatari second division club Al-Ahli SC . He ended his career in late 2015.
