The Festlbeilstein is an 1847  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Hochschwab group in the Austrian state of Styria . It is a double summit , consisting of a large and a small Festlbeilstein ( 1815  m above sea level ).

Location and surroundings

The double summit rises north over the end of the Ilgner valley and southeast over the Trawiestal in the central part of the Hochschwab group. Together with the Mühlkarturm ( 1865  m ) and Karlspitz ( 1906  m ), the Kleiner and Großer Festlbeilstein form a distinctive ridge running through the WSW-ONO at the western end of the Karlalm plateau. The ridge continues on the Reidelsteinriedel, which slopes only on the north side, to the Reidelstein ( 1467  m ) and finally forms a wooded cone above the Ilgner valley head from Buchberg. The most famous sight is from the Reidelsteinriedel and is one of the most popular photo opportunities in the Hochschwab area.

Geology and geomorphology

The Festlbeilstein owes its striking appearance to the geological structure of reef-forming Dachstein limestone . He is facies part, at their base in the area of Reidel stone next to run over parts of the Hochschwab scale of strongly deformed Fölzschuppe Gutensteiner layers , Steinalmkalk and auflagernde pelagic sediments and Haselgebirge remain. Fossil -rich cardita layers are exposed on the west ridge of the mountain .

Alpinism

Falling south from Festlbeilstein, Mühlkarturm and Karlspitz

The Festlbeilstein is one of only a few peaks in the Hochschwab area that is reserved for climbers . The ascent to the foot of the wall usually takes about 2 hours from Gasthof Bodenbauer ( 884  m ), first via a forest path, then via a clearly recognizable but unmarked path along the Reidelsteinriedel. After crossing the Schrofen area , the normal route leads through a steep gorge ( I + ) and then over the east ridge (II +) to the main summit.

The crossing of both Festlbeilsteine including the Mühlkarturm and Karlspitz on the plateau ( Oblivion ) is more popular. To do this, climb up the small (IV +) and large Festlbeilstein (V) over the western edge. After descending over the brittle east ridge (normal route), there are renewed upswings over the west ridge (V–) to the Mühlkarturm and after a further descent over the west plate (V +) to the Karlspitz. When the tour ended at the Great Festlbeilstein can on the south wall roped be.
