Fethi Bey
Mehmet Fethi Bey , also known as Tayyareci Fethi Bey and Yüzbaşı Fethi Bey (born June 12, 1887 in Istanbul , † March 3, 1914 in Tiberias ) was the first Turkish pilot and officer in the Ottoman army . After his death, the Turkish city of Meğri was renamed Fethiye in his honor.
Life
Fethi Bey was born in Ayazpaşa , a district of Istanbul's Beyoğlu district .
In 1907 he finished his training at Deniz Harp Okulu (Eng. "Naval Academy"). In 1911 he was sent to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for training purposes. Here he visited an aircraft factory in Bristol and trained as a pilot and on aeronautics. Then he returned to his homeland and became the Yüzbaşı, one the captain appropriate degree transported. After returning home, he organized air shows in Istanbul.
In 1914, the then government bought the French two-seater Blériot XI for a prestige project and renamed it Muavenet-i Milliye (German national support ). With this plane, Fethi Bey and his scout Sadık Bey were supposed to fly from Istanbul via Konya , Ulukışla , Adana , Homs , Damascus and İskenderiye to Cairo, flying over three continents and bringing prestige to the Ottoman Empire .
Fethi Bey made it to the town of Şimiriye near Tiberias in his plane and had a fatal accident with his copilot on March 3, 1914. This made Fethi Bey the first dead pilot in Turkish aviation.
On March 8, 1914, five days after the accident in Sadık and Fethi Bey, Nuri Bey had an accident near Damascus with the second aircraft of the project. Together with Sadık Bey and Nuri Bey, Fethi Bey was buried in the Saladin mausoleum in Damascus .
Since the press at the time reported continuously about the course of the project, Fethi Bey was well known among the population. In his honor, the founder of the called modern Turkey , Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , the south Turkish town of Megri in Fethiye to. There the Şehit Fethi Bey İlköğretim Okulu Elementary School was named after him. In the second half of the 20th century, a 10 meter high statue of him was erected in Fethiye between the harbor and the Hellenistic Theater.
