Filipów ( Lithuanian Pilypavas ) is a former town in the rural municipality in the powiat Suwalski of the Podlaskie Voivodeship in Poland . The place is the seat of the rural community of the same name with about 4400 inhabitants.
geography
Filipów is located in the historical Suwalszczyzna region on the Rospuda River , which leaves the Jezioro Kamienne in the north of the village and flows through the smaller Jezioro Długie in the south. The two lakes are glacial channel lakes and belong to the Pojezierze Suwalskie (Suwałki Lake District).
history
The town was granted city rights in 1570. During the third partition of Poland in 1795, the city fell to Prussia, in 1807 it belonged to the Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 it became part of the Russian Congress of Poland . In 1861 the city had 291 houses and 2551 inhabitants. The important Jewish community numbered 812 people. City rights were revoked in 1870.
In 1909 Filipów became the seat of a parish of the Old Catholic Mariavite Church . The ruins of the destroyed chapel are still preserved.
Polish again since 1918, the place was in the immediate vicinity of the German border. During the Second World War , 90 percent of Filipów was destroyed. From 1975 to 1998 it was part of the Suwałki Voivodeship .
- Battle of Filipów
In the Second Northern War (1655–1660), 11,000 soldiers met at the Battle of Filipów on October 22, 1656. The battle ended with a victory for the Swedish-Brandenburg-Prussian troops over the Polish-Lithuanian troops.

The place Filipów is divided into four districts with a Schulzenamt : Filipów Pierwszy, Filipów Drugi, Filipów Trzeci and Filipów Czwarty (or Filipów I-IV).
Attractions
- The classical parish church, built in 1838, is a listed building . The design comes from Chrystian Piotr Aigner . The baroque main altar dates from the middle of the 17th century.
