Filip Sakala (born May 21, 1996 in Čeladná ) is a Czech ski jumper .

Career

Sakala, who competes for TJ Dukla Frenštát pod Radhoštěm , is the son of former ski flying world champion Jaroslav Sakala . He made his international debut in two competitions within the framework of the FIS Cup on January 28 and 29, 2012 in Szczyrk , where he was 45th and 35th. Three weeks later he was able to get his first points in this series of competitions in Brattleboro with a twelfth and a sixth place. In January 2013 Sakala took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec , where he did not get beyond a 55th place. A short time later he made his debut in Planica in the Continental Cup , where he only reached the lower ranks. When the European Youth Olympic Festival 2013 in Romania Brasov he finished eleventh and the team to eighth place in singles. He achieved the best result with fourth place in the mixed team together with Barbora Blažková , Michaela Rajnochová and Damián Lasota .

In December 2013 Sakala jumped into the points of a Continental Cup for the first time in Engelberg . He could not add any more to the two points in the further course of the season, so that he took 177th place in the overall ranking of 2013/14 . In the following years Sakala took part primarily in FIS Cup or Continental Cup competitions and first tried his hand at the World Cup in February 2015, when he could not qualify in Vikersund . His largest distance on the Vikersundbakken was 127.5 meters, which is why he spent the rest of the season in lower-class competition series.

At the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty , Sakala finished sixth with the team, while he finished 31st in the individual. In the summer of 2017, Sakala had some good results in the Continental Cup , but initially he was unable to confirm these achievements in winter. It was not until the competition in Klingenthal in February 2018 that he jumped into the top ten and achieved his best result of the season with ninth place.

In the 2018/19 season Sakala was an integral part of the Czech B-squad and thus regularly jumped in the Continental Cup . After he was able to call up his capabilities again in Klingenthal and finished fifth, head coach David Jiroutek nominated him for the World Cup weekend in Zakopane in mid-January. One day after his failed qualification attempt, Sakala took sixth place in the team competition from Wielka Krokiew together with Viktor Polášek , Čestmír Kožíšek and Roman Koudelka . After he competed in the Continental Cup again in the following weeks, he was again part of the Czech World Cup team at the team competition in Willingen , which was eighth this time. Sakala experienced his preliminary career highlight at the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld , where he finished 29th in normal hill jumping from the Toni-Seelos-Olympiaschanze . After the first round, when he finished sixth in difficult conditions, a lot more seemed possible. However, Sakala only jumped to 85.0 meters in the second round and finally landed on the penultimate place. In the days that followed, the competition management was criticized, so that the sporting director of the German team Horst Hüttel , for example, complained that the jury did not intervene because of the heavy snowfall: “The second round was completely irregular. If that is not irregular, then I no longer understand the world. There is competition management for this. They failed miserably. ”He was not set up for the individual jumping on the large hill and the team competitions.

After Sakala had always failed in qualifying, he took part in an individual competition of the World Cup in Wisła , Poland for the first time at the start of the 2019/20 season , but just missed the second round.
