Filippo Re

Filippo Re (born July 20, 1763 in Reggio nell'Emilia , † March 26, 1817 ibid) was an Italian botanist and agricultural scientist .

biography

Filippo Re was born to Rinaldo and Marianna Vezzani. His family originally came from Lombardy . His grandfather Antonio Re had in 1720 by Duke Francesco III. d'Este received the right to collect taxes and was so wealthy that he and his descendants received the title of Conte (comparable to the German Count ).

He had to interrupt his studies with the Jesuits in Ravenna because of the prohibition of the order in 1773, but was still able to complete his diploma in mathematics in Reggio Emilia in 1781. In the following years the increasingly from the flora and undertook Botany fascinated Filippo Re extensive research trips in the Apennines and Tuscany . A herbarium that he created with 7835 entries can still be viewed today in the public palace museum of Reggio nell'Emilia .

In 1790 he received the chair of agricultural sciences in his hometown.

From 1803 Filippo Re held a chair at the University of Bologna , from 1805 to 1806 he was its rector. For this reason, both the University's Botanical Garden and the adjacent street in Bologna are named after him.

After the restoration period , Filippo Re was a lecturer in botany and agricultural sciences at the University of Modena . For decades he was one of the most important theorists for agricultural sciences in Italy and had a decisive influence on the discourse of the 19th century .

Filippo Re died of typhus in 1817 .

Significance for agricultural sciences

Filippo Res's works were the most popular in his subject in 19th century Italy. Several new editions were published by the middle of the century. This was followed by a longer period of disinterest, until a new wave of attention emerged in the 1980s and 1990s and Filippo Re either celebrated it as Galileo Galilei of agricultural science or compared it in its importance to the Roman scribe Columella .
