Finsternau is a village and a cadastral municipality in the Brand-Nagelberg municipality in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria .

Population development

In the first census in Austria-Hungary in 1869, 365 people lived in Finsternau. The population grew a little afterwards and reached its peak in 1880 with 449 people. In the 20th century the number of residents decreased continuously and on January 1st, 2020 the village had only 160 residents.

Settlement development

At the turn of the year 1979/1980 there was a total of 62 building areas with 31,294 m² and 40 gardens on 12,034 m² in the cadastral community of Finsternau, in 1989/1990 there were 98 building areas. In 1999/2000 the number of building areas had grown to 253 and in 2009/2010 there were 115 buildings on 244 building areas.

Agriculture

The cadastral community is characterized by agriculture. 211 hectares were used for agriculture at the turn of the year 1979/1980 and 458 hectares were forest areas. In 1999/2000 agriculture was carried out on 189 hectares and 469 hectares were designated as forest areas. At the end of 2018, 183 hectares were used as agricultural land and forestry was carried out on 46,817 hectares. The average soil climate of Finsternau is 14.1 (as of 2010).
