The flag of Niue is the only flag of the British type with a yellow background. The gold-yellow represents "the sunshine over Niue and the warm feelings of the people of Niue towards New Zealand and its people".
The Union Jack in the Obereck points to the island's past as a British protectorate. The four little yellow stars represent the Southern Cross and the state of New Zealand under whose administration the island fell from 1901, as well as the good and close relations with this country. The big yellow star on the blue disk stands for the self-government status of the individual island, which is alone in the deep blue sea.
The flag was officially introduced in 1975 .
