Flavobacterium aquatile is a type of bacteria . The species was found in fresh water with moderate temperatures.

features

The species Flavobacterium aquatile is Gram-negative . The cells are rod-shaped, the length is in the range of approx. 0.5-0.7 × 1.0-3.0 µm. Filamentous forms also occur. In some cultures it has been observed that the bacterium moves by sliding motion, but this has not been confirmed by other authors. This type of movement occurs in many types of Flavobacterium . The cultures are colored brown, which is due to the production of β-carotene . In contrast to some other species of the genus , such as F. aquidurense , the pigment flexirubin is not produced.

Flavobacterium aquatile is aerobic , the terminal electron acceptor in breathing is oxygen . Growth takes place at temperatures of 10–40 ° C, a temperature of 30 ° C is optimal. Nitrate is reduced to nitrite . Hydrogen sulfide is not formed. Optimal growth occurs in the absence of NaCl , a content of up to 0.5% is tolerated. An amylase enzyme is present, the bacterium can use starch . Also casein and esculin be hydrolyzed , gelatin is not used. The enzymes urease and chitinase are not present. Hydrogen sulfide is not formed.

The effects of some antibiotics were tested. The bacterium shows antibiotic resistance to benzylpenicillin (penicillin G) and kanamycin . The following agents showed no effect: chloramphenicol , gentamicin , nalidixic acid , streptomycin , tetracycline and vancomycin .

As with all types of Flavobacterium , the dominant menaquinone is MK6.

The GC content in the DNA is 32.2%.

Systematics

Flavobacterium aquatile belongs to the family of the Flavobacteriaceae , which in turn belongs to the class Bacteroidetes . It is the type of their order, the Flavobacteriales . There is only one strain of this species, the bacterium was isolated from a deep well in England.
