The Gimhae International Airport ( Korean 김해 국제 공항 RR Gimhae gukjegonghang , Eng. Gimhae International Airport ) is the airport of the city of Busan in South Korea , located in the adjacent administrative area of the city Gimhae is. It is located 20 km west of Busan and has a national and international passenger and goods terminal.

Part of the area is used as a military airfield (김해 기지, Gimhae Gonggun Kige) by the South Korean Air Force .

history

The city's first airport opened in August 1958 under the name Busan Suyong Airfield . In September 1963 it was renamed Busan International Airport and in August 1978 it was relocated to its current location and renamed Gimhae International Airport . The "Busan-West" military airfield, which was built during the Korean War, was located here.

In 2011, a rail link was put into operation, connecting the airport to the Busan subway network . There are 21 stations on the 23.92 km route.

Military use

The main military user is the 5th transport squadron, to which the majority of the transport aircraft are subordinate. The tankers and early warning aircraft are also part of the squadron.

Regular domestic flights go to Seoul-Incheon , Seoul-Gimpo , and Jeju , international are Guam , Nagoya , Nanjing , Tokyo , Manila , Bangkok , Beijing , Guangzhou , Vladivostok , Osaka , Saipan , Shanghai , Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , Sapporo , Siem Reap , Fly to Xian , Shenyang , Qingdao , Taipei , Hangzhou , Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City , Hong Kong , Fukuoka and Weihai .

Planning

In April 2017, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation put out a feasibility study and the master plan for the project to build the new Gimhae Airport with a volume of 4.2 billion won (36.8 million dollars).

The contract is to be completed within twelve months. As part of the 5.96 trillion won (5.2 billion dollar) project, a runway, terminal for international flights and other facilities will be built west of the existing Gimhae Airport in Busan. It should be able to serve 38 million passengers a year there.

The ministry wants to complete the construction work by 2025 in order to open the new airport in 2026 after a trial run in 2025.
