The Humberside Airport is located in Kirmington ( North Lincolnshire , England ) between the towns of Grimsby , Hull and Scunthorpe . It belongs to the airline Eastern Airways and serves as its operational base and headquarters.

The airport competes with the neighboring airports of East Midlands , Doncaster / Sheffield and Leeds / Bradford ; all three airports offer a larger range of flights than Humberside Airport. A total of around 200,000 passengers were handled in 2016, a decrease of 9.0% compared to 2015. This makes the airport 33rd among the largest airports in the United Kingdom.

Due to its low usage fees, the airport has a very high share of general aviation . It is the base for helicopter flights on natural gas platforms in the North Sea .

history

Today's civil airport was originally built in 1941 as the military airfield Royal Air Force Station Kirmington , or RAF Kirmington for short , of the Bomber Command of the Royal Air Force during the Second World War . A first Wellington- equipped squadron moved to the base in October 1942. The 166th Squadron lay here for the longest, from January 1943 to November 1945 . This was initially also equipped with Wellingtons, but converted to the Lancaster in September 1943 . The plant was initially mothballed in 1945 and transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture in 1953. It lay fallow until 1970.

Then it reopened as Kirmington Airport after a four-year renovation phase . When the area was renamed Humberside a short time later , the airport was also renamed Humberside Airport . The then runway 3/21 (now 02/20) was expanded to its current length in 1992 in order to make it usable for larger aircraft.

Transport links

The airport can be reached from the west via the M180 to Barnetby , where the airport's nearest train station is also located; From there it is another 4 km to the destination via the A18 road .

There is an hourly bus service with Grimsby and Hull, Monday through Saturday .
