The Kuala Namu International Airport ( IATA : KNO , ICAO : WIMM ) is the new airport in Medan , the capital of the province of Sumatra Utara . It opened on July 25, 2013 and replaces the old Polonia Airport , which was taken over by the Indonesian Air Force and renamed Soewondo Air Force Base . Planning for the airport began in the early 1990s, but was delayed by the Asian crisis . It is part of the Indonesian government program to accelerate economic growth in Indonesia (MP3EI) and is to be developed into a regional hub for the northern areas of Indonesia.

history

Since the location of Polonia airport does not allow any expansion and the approach from the south has already led to several plane crashes , a large new airport building 20 kilometers northeast of the old location was planned since the 1990s. Construction work on Kuala Namu Airport began on June 29, 2006 and should end when it opens in 2009. After the opening was postponed several times, it finally took place on July 25, 2013. The site, which is about three km from the coast, will be about 6.5 km long and 2.1 km wide in the final stage.

Like almost all new airports worldwide, the airport is planned in such a way that it can be expanded step-by-step and in line with demand.

The first construction phase will cost $ 484 million and provide capacity for approximately 8 million passengers, with approximately 7 million expected. The second expansion stage in 2025 is already designed for 15 million passengers. In the final expansion stage, the handling facilities should be able to handle up to 50 million passengers per year. These forecasts are not utopian if you look at the development of traffic figures for Indonesian air traffic and the population development over the years.

The airport is also to receive a rail link for USD 215 million to provide passengers with a comfortable and fast connection to the center of Medan.

The planners hope that the new airport will welcome more international airlines and thus promote the local tourism industry and economy. In addition, the vacated areas in Medan can be used to build a new business district, which could be developed into the new city center of Medan.
