The Sisimiut Airport ( IATA: JHS , ICAO: BGSS ) is 4.5 km northwest of Spring Hill in west-central Greenland. The airfield has a runway called 14/32, which measures 799 × 30 m and was built on the northern bank of the Kangerluarsunnguaq (Ulkebugt).

Scheduled flights are operated exclusively by Air Greenland , which uses the airport as a stopover and does not station any aircraft there.

history

Before the airport was opened in the 1990s, the settlement was served by the now closed, nearby heliport in the Sisimiut Valley.

Roads in Sisimiut are generally paved , as is the connection to the airport. However, there is no road that connects Sisimiut with other settlements. There were plans to connect the community to Kangerlussuaq via a 170 km long connecting road . It would have been the first road in Greenland that connects two places.

With 5,460 inhabitants, Sisimiut is the second largest town in Greenland and one of the few to see population growth, which also leads to an increase in the number of flight movements. The main flight connection is to Kangerlussuaq, followed by flights to the capital Nuuk and Ilulissat .

future

In the future, together with the planned replacement of the Air Greenland fleet, they want to expand the runway.

Infrastructure

There is no aircraft de-icing infrastructure at the airport, which causes problems in the Greenland winter.

All passengers who stop at the airport and continue on with the same aircraft have to disembark after landing and go through the boarding process again before they can board the aircraft again.

At the airport there is a letterbox for the Greenland Post, a soft drink machine and a television, as well as a small museum and a kiosk.
