Air Greenland also operates government services to remote settlements in the Disko Bay region. These flights, mostly cargo flights, are not listed in any flight plan, although they can be booked in advance. The departure times are only given approximately so that they can be adjusted as required. Such flights are only operated in winter and spring, while the area is served by the Discoline ship route in summer and autumn .
Expansion of the runway
The use of the airport is a hot topic in Greenland. There is pressure from local tourism and the municipal authorities to extend the slope. A longer (1799 m) runway would allow direct flights from Europe. The airport, along with Kangerlussuaq, would then become the main Greenland airport. There is general discussion about expanding or building all airports in the country.
