Station north
Coordinates: 81 ° 36 ′ N , 16 ° 40 ′ W
The Station Nord is a Danish military base in Greenland . It is the northernmost permanently manned station of the Danish Armed Forces and belongs to the Arktisk Command .
The station's Danish name refers to its northern location in Greenland. The Danish word Nord is synonymous with the corresponding German word Nord .
Location and surroundings
Station Nord is 1700 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle and 924 kilometers south of the North Pole on the Prinsesse Ingeborg Halvø (Princess Ingeborg Peninsula) in the northern Crown Prince Christian Land . The area is part of the unincorporated area of Northeast Greenland National Park . Further north are only the temporary stations Brønlundhus and Cape Harald Moltke on Jørgen-Brønlund-Fjord in Pearyland .
The military station consists of 35 buildings and a runway (a snow-covered runway with a length of 1800 meters, ICAO code BGNO) and is manned by around five people all year round. Over 20 scientists can join in during the summer.
The station can mainly be reached by air, as ice barriers block the sea route. The ice conditions would only allow access from the sea every five to ten years. However, it is also regularly approached by the Sirius patrol by dog sled overland.
history
The station was built by Danes and Americans between 1952 and 1956 as a weather and telecommunications station. It was needed for more precise weather reports for the new American Thule Air Base 1200 kilometers to the west , but also as a base for the Sirius patrol . It was closed in 1972 and reopened in 1975 as a Danish military base (Operation Brilliant Ice ).
