The airfield Betzdorf-Kirchen ( ICAO code: EDKI) is an airfield in the district old churches , near the places Katz angle and Wingendorf .

history

• 1958: Development of the airfield on the ridge between Katzwinkel and Wingendorf
• 1959: Approval of the site as a glider flying site. Initially, it started exclusively in winch towing operation
• 1963: The extensive work to widen and level the runway was completed
• 1964: The previous glider airfield was officially approved as a 'Betzdorf-Kirchen' airfield
• 1970: The last major day of flying took place at the airfield, which ended with the fatal crash of a motorized aerobatic pilot
• 1981: Since 1981, a so-called airfield festival has been held every year on the first weekend in September
• 1987: The runway of the airfield was subjected to a comprehensive renovation measure with sports funding from the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and financial support from the Altenkirchen district
• 2005: The SFC Betzdorf-Kirchen is the organizer of the State Glider Day Rhineland-Palatinate. The guest is the former space pilot Ulf Merbold
• 2014: The SFC Betzdorf-Kirchen is again the organizer of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Sailing Day. As a highlight, a lecture by Dörte Starsinski, vice world champion in the women's club class.

In the next few years, the runway is to be extended by approx. 150 m and also widened in some places. A winch is to be purchased for more environmentally friendly, quieter and cheaper glider operations.
