The airfield Speyer is the commercial airport of the city of Speyer .

Start-and runway

The runway was extended to 1,677 meters in autumn 2011. This means that 1400 meters are available for take-offs and landings. Even after the introduction of the new European safety surcharges according to Joint Aviation Requirements for Operations (JAR-OPS 1), the length is sufficient for commercial air traffic and works traffic.

Directions

The airfield is located in the southeast of the city in a knee of the Rhine . The Speyer Cathedral can be reached in ten minutes on foot. The Technik-Museum Speyer is immediately north.

Public transport : The city center can be reached in a few minutes via a city shuttle stop at the Technik Museum. Speyer has a main train station with a connection to the Rhein-Neckar transport association . There is a railway line to Ludwigshafen and Mannheim Hbf , the nearest ICE train station.

Operating company

The airfield is operated by Flugplatz Speyer / Ludwigshafen GmbH (FSL). The majority owner of the company was from 2000 to 2013 the IHK Pfalz. In 2013, the Annual General Meeting decided to sell most of the shares to BASF , which will become the largest shareholder with almost 50%. In 2015, the airfield generated a loss of 475,000 euros. In 2016, the airfield generated a loss of 478,000 euros.

Main building and tower

Due to its great importance for the regional economy, an extension of the runway was planned, which was originally supposed to be completed in 2007. The runway was extended by approx. 450 m from 1226 m to 1677 m. The approximately 500 m long grass runway west of the asphalt runway was not affected by the expansion. This expansion is being combated by a citizens' initiative, several city council groups (SPD, Greens, BGS, ÖDP) and neighboring communities because of safety concerns, noise expectations, rejection of the necessary deforestation in the alluvial forest and concerns about the cathedral right next to the approach lane. In 2009 the Higher Administrative Court of Rhineland-Palatinate approved the plan approval decision with the exception of the night flight regulation. On September 16, 2010, the preparatory work for the expansion of the airfield (necessary relocation of a district road on the expansion area) began. The work to expand the runway was completed in 2011 and celebrated with a party.

Discussion about the future of Mannheim City Airport

At the political and economic level of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, a discussion about the future of Mannheim Airport has been going on for some time . The main arguments against continued operation in the future are the safety deficiencies and the related incident in March 2008, in which a Dornier 328 from Cirrus Airlines shot over the runway on approach. As a possible alternative, in addition to the runway in the Coleman Barracks that is currently not cleared for civil aviation , the Speyer airfield is also mentioned.

Plane of the Pfalz-Flugzeugwerke in the First World War

The airfield goes back to the founding of the Pfalz-Flugzeugwerke in 1913. After its demise in 1937 the Flugwerke Pfalz-Saar settled down . After the Second World War , the aviation club was founded and Heinkel settled there , later part of VFW , VFW- Fokker , MBB and DASA . In 1971 the asphalt runway was laid, which was expanded in 1986. In 1994 an operating company bought the airfield from DASA.

After the adjoining Technology Museum decided to exhibit an Antonow An-22 in 1999, the question of how to transport the machine to Speyer arose. The decision was made to land the 120-ton aircraft in Speyer, which presented the world's largest propeller-driven cargo aircraft with another challenge. Numerous preparations were made to enable the landing, which is often compared to that on an aircraft carrier, and the transport to the museum via Heinkelstrasse. Trees in the approach lane were trimmed and the fence at the end of the runway was dismantled. The grass area facing the street was also weighted down with metal plates so that the plane would not get stuck. A museum building in the approach lane was even reduced by one floor.
