( Boeseman , 1948)

Fontitrygon geijskesi is a species of stingray and lives in the equatorial western Atlantic between the coasts of Venezuela and northern Brazil (state of Amapá ). The species may also be common in the Caribbean .

features

Fontitrygon geijskesi has a round pectoral fin disc that is about as wide as it is long, and usually reaches a disc width of 70 cm (maximum 1.50 meters). The pointed rostrum protrudes far beyond the disc and is about half as long as it. The whip-like tail is more than twice as long as the disc and has a poisonous sting or two. The top is dark brown. The underside is white with gray around the edges. The teeth are yellowish white.

Way of life

The ray lives near the coast in shallow water between 5 and 80 meters and also goes in brackish water . There is also evidence from a depth of 810 meters. During the equatorial dry seasons it stays closer to the coast , during the rainy seasons a little further away from the coast. It feeds on invertebrates such as worms , crustaceans and molluscs , which it usually digs up from the sea floor. The species is ovoviviparous with litters of one to three young. In the uterus, the embryos first feed on the egg yolk, then on a slimy fluid that is secreted from the uterus and enriched with fat and proteins.

Systematics

The ray species was described in 2004 by the Dutch ichthyologist Marinus Boeseman under the scientific name Dasyatis geijskesi . When the Dasyatidae was revised in mid-2016 , the species was placed in the newly introduced genus Fontitrygon .
