Forráskút is a municipality in Csongrád-Csanád County in southeastern Hungary . It is located 23.2 km northwest of the county capital Szeged in the small area Mórahalom and has 2350 inhabitants (as of 2010). Forráskút means spring well in Hungarian and goes back to the wells in the village, which are fed by the streams that run past the community.

geography

Located in the Great Hungarian Plain , the place is about 20 km west of the Tisza River and about 7 km west of the M5 motorway between Budapest and Szeged . Its direct neighboring communities Zsombó , Bordány , Üllés and Balástya are still in the Csongráder area, while Csólyospálos to the north already belongs to the Bács-Kiskun county . As in large parts of the Puszta, the soil consists mainly of fine, brown sand and is used for growing grain, maize, potatoes, wine and, above all, spiced peppers . In the surroundings of Forrátkúts there are smaller forest areas and fishing lakes, in the direction of Szeged there are two large lakes ( Fehér-tó and Sándorfalvi halastó ), which provide drinking water for the population.

climate

There is a temperate continental climate with little rainfall, hot summers and cold winters. The coldest month is January with temperatures around freezing point, the warmest is July (+23.0 ° C) whereby in summer the maximum daily temperatures can exceed 40 ° C and the annual average temperature is 17 ° C. The relative humidity in summer is usually below 64% and with over 2000 hours of sunshine a year, the region is the sunniest in Hungary.

history

Forráskút became an independent municipality in 1950, and the settlement can be traced back to the 13th century. In the chronicles it is mentioned that there was already a stone-built church at this point in 1478, which was replaced in 1906 by a new Roman Catholic church made of 97,000 bricks. In 1977 Forráskút was temporarily incorporated into the neighboring community of Üllés. This situation lasted until it finally became independent in early 1979.

Culture and sights

Every year on the third Saturday in August the village festival (falunap) takes place, during which the residents dressed in traditional robes go through the village with decorated horse-drawn carts. At the end of the holiday there is a big fireworks display in the evening. Other festivities include the annual grape harvest festival (szüret), which takes place at the end of September, and another festival called "Tree Stump Pulling" (tuskóhúzás), which is celebrated on the seventh Sunday before Easter. A memorial was erected in the central parish park to commemorate those who died during World War II, which is currently the only memorial in the parish.

economy

Forráskút's economy is characterized by agriculture. In addition to the agricultural producers' cooperative "TÉSZ", which originated from the socialist era and operates large greenhouses in the south of the municipality, there is only one other supraregional mechanical engineering company for agricultural machinery, the FORRÁS GÉPEK Kft.

Personalities

One of the most famous personalities is the singer of the Hungarian band Nox (Band) Szilvia Péter Szabó (* 1982), who was born in neighboring Szeged but grew up in Forráskút. The band represented Hungary at the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 in Kiev .
