The research community for electronic media e. V. (FeM) is one of the largest student associations at a university in Thuringia . The association was founded in 1997 in the vicinity of the TU Ilmenau . It currently has around 2,000 members and operates the largest self-administered student network in Germany. The association also achieved fame outside of Thuringia through various streaming projects.

aims

The goals of the association are to carry out projects in research, science and education, upbringing, art and culture and international understanding in the field of electronic media. In addition, similar projects by other organizations that relate to or are located in the area of electronic media will be funded. Furthermore, youth work is carried out, in particular the promotion of young computer users. Here, they are introduced to new technologies in order to get to know and use them. FeM e. V. carries out public relations work to familiarize the population with new technologies and to point out the opportunities and risks involved.

history

In the vicinity of the TU Ilmenau, many different student initiatives had developed in the student dormitories with the aim of equipping the corresponding dormitories with cable ducts and network technology.

Wiring of block K in 2002

The first TU-Connect project failed, but established contacts with the computer center and the student union. The first dormitory was equipped with network cables during renovation by the student union in 1996. The attempt to accommodate the project at radio hsf was rejected because of concerns about the charitable status. As a result, a non-profit association was founded on April 15, 1997, which is based on a network and Internet access. This was the hour of birth of the Research Association for Electronic Media e. V.

The virtual lecture hall project was brought into being through cooperation with the computer center and presented together on June 14, 1997 at the open day in the Thuringian state parliament. In November, an internet connection was secured through a cooperation agreement with the TU Ilmenau . A video conference was also demonstrated with the Virtual Lecture Hall project in November 1997 , which at that time was a major challenge due to the data throughput required and the technical difficulties. With the addition of residents of other residential buildings on campus , the financial framework has been significantly improved. In 2001 one of the most important projects arose, which later became known as the Ilmenau student portal , or s for short . In 2005, the live broadcast of plenary sessions began in cooperation with the Thuringian Parliament . In addition, for the first time Chaos Communication Congress of the Chaos Computer Club transferred and recorded. Around ten new projects were added between 2002 and 2005.

At the end of 1996, in the course of media training at the Technical University of Ilmenau, the “ilmenauer Studenten-Fernseh-Funk”, or “iSTUFF” for short, was founded. Initially intended by the Institute for Media Technology only to offer media technology students a practical basis, it quickly became apparent that iSTUFF met with great interest from all media students at the TU Ilmenau. After long negotiations, looking for a legal form for iSTUFF, iSTUFF became a department of FeM in September 2006. In close cooperation with the TU Ilmenau, many projects in the field of media are implemented.

Development of donation income

Since the association has a warehouse with extensive technology and this is given to internal teams / projects, as well as partly to external partners, IT-supported warehouse management has been in place since 2007. The streaming team recorded two concerts together with the iSTUFF department, which are under the Creative Commons license, and Formula Student Germany was broadcast live from 2007 to 2010 .

FEM and ISTUFF were registered as word marks of FeM e. V. registered with the German Patent and Trademark Office . A short time after registration, there was a legal dispute with a large German television broadcasting group, with FeM issuing a license for unrestricted use of the FeM brand.

In the run-up to the 27th Chaos Communication Congress , a call for donations was launched in November 2010 in order to receive support in acquiring new streaming technology. A total of 13,629.95 € donations could be collected (as of January 28, 2011).

In the summer semester of 2012, the Broadcast department was created from the merger of various projects with the Streaming department.

At the beginning of 2013, a third word mark was secured with the brand Himmelblau tv. Furthermore, a contribution by Himmelblau tv from 2013 was honored with the Central Germany Broadcasting Prize in the Thuringia Country Prize category.

As early as 2011 there were considerations to buy an outside broadcast van. The considerations became more concrete in the 2013/2014 winter semester. A used Mercedes-Benz Sprinter panel van should serve as the basis . The aim was to significantly simplify the technical part of live broadcasts. The expansion took place in several expansion stages and was tested for the first time at an event in September 2014.

In 2015, the Robotics student working group founded in 2014 was a FeM project and took place in March 2016 at the RobotChallange in Vienna. They competed in the Air Race and Puck Collect categories and won first place in the Air Race category.

Departments

The research community for electronic media e. V. is divided internally into five departments. The management and marketing departments are mainly used for internal communication, administration and presentation internally and externally, but are not relevant to the public.

technology

Now that all student dormitories are wired and networked, the area of responsibility of the technology department has changed more and more from the initial installation to the maintenance and modernization of the infrastructure. The main projects are in the area of conversion and modernization of the network and the operating rooms, expansion and maintenance of existing services, support for other associations, especially in the areas of mail and web hosting, as well as the use of new services such as Icinga .

Broadcast

The Broadcast department emerged from the merger of various projects with the Streaming department. This deals with the transmission of audio and video signals in networks in several sub-projects and thus contributes to the virtual lecture hall project . Larger events are streamed regularly. This would include streaming plenary sessions from the Thuringian state parliament , live and on-demand streaming from the Chaos Communication Congress

When the Chaos Communication Congress moved to Hamburg (29C3), the computer resources and bandwidth of other student networks in Germany could be used. There was also support from the CCC environment. In the following year, the Video Operation Center (VOC) was set up within the CCC, which was supported. Since the 31C3 the VOC has taken over the management and is supported by the FeM.

From 2007 to 2010 the Formula Student Germany was broadcast at the Hockenheimring .

Another part of the department is the provision of a broadcasting loop for own TV programs from the own TV station iSTUFF. The distribution channels include - in addition to an Internet stream - a DVB-T transmitter in the city of Ilmenau.

iSTUFF

iSTUFF is the student television station of the TU Ilmenau. Here, students can experience the tasks arising in the areas of editing, technology and IT, program design and implementation, training, organization of day-to-day business and the implementation of new projects, such as the gradual conversion to digital technology.

Technology and reception

Direction in the media laboratory II

The studios are laboratories of the TU Ilmenau, which are made available to the students for the purpose of the study-accompanying training. Two studios are available for production and broadcasts: The "Studio Oec" with analog TV technology (for example Betacam SP ) to get to know the production processes as well as the "Medienlabor II" for more complex programs and productions, which is digitally based ( SDI ) two has integrated complete studios with five cameras. The conventional part offers a modern studio environment with opera film, the other part offers the possibilities of a virtual studio. The control room is equipped with IMX , DigitalS, DVCPro , MiniDV , two video mixers , a sound mixer , a font generator and a teleprompter . iSTUFF can be received in the cable network on campus and in some cable communities in the city area. It is also possible to receive the program via stream via the website or via DVB-T.

program

The members decide what is shown at iSTUFF. Before each semester, those responsible for program design collect the members' suggestions. Everything that attracts enough interested parties to participate is then produced. Then the broadcast dates are set and the respective teams are formed and represented by a main manager and a technical and marketing manager. The production of the program and the subsequent distribution via campus cable and the Internet design the respective broadcast formats themselves. The team finds technical support here at the iSTUFF technical team. During the semester iSTUFF produces s TV every week . This program is linked directly to the club's own student portal using HTML5 and provides news and entertaining news from student life every week.

Special broadcasts

In addition to the regular broadcast formats, iSTUFF also produces special broadcasts such as "ISWIsion". The "International Student Week Ilmenau", or ISWI for short , takes place in Ilmenau in odd years . In this context, a live broadcast in English is produced for one hour every day in order to reach the international audience. The team is supported by guests and older iSTUFF members.

ISTUFF also produced for the “Himmelblau Festival”, an open-air festival in the Ilmenau city park: since the first festival in 2003, iSTUFF has supported this event with a live video broadcast on large screens and subsequent DVD production.

A “Christmas program” is produced every year. This is a live broadcast from Medienlabor II. In terms of content, the respective broadcasts are quite different. For example, in 2004 the successful format Wetten, dass ..? adapted and in the iSTUFF version to “Wetten Was ..?! - The biggest show of the year ”, in 2008 the well-known show Schlag den Raab became the iSTUFF version“ Schlag den Rick ”. In addition, numerous of our own format ideas were implemented at great expense.

Other Projects

Other projects deal with:

Project name Project description
Fiwak The FiWaK (FeM bivouac ) takes place once a year in summer under the motto “With the computer off to the Thuringian Forest” . In addition to lectures and workshops on technical issues, there are also courses on soft skills.
Pergon The Pergon project deals with the setting up and further development, or complete redevelopment, of a server for group pastime. It emerged in 1999 as a follow-up project to a similar system that was based on a different basic system, but (probably for this reason) could not establish itself and after a relatively short time disappeared again. It was founded by five students who wanted to pursue the basic idea of this system.
SMR Space Merchant Realms has existed since August 2001 and is a web browser- based online game that has no commercial intent. It requires skill, strategic thinking and procedures as well as the ability to work in a team from each of its players.
s s is a central student community with numerous communication functions. It offers a platform for the inter-student exchange of all information relating to Ilmenau and is the point of contact for all aspects of everyday student life. In addition to personal features, such as a profile, guest book and photo gallery, which s offers each individual user, all students within their courses of study can be found in so-called intersections, where specific forums, links, calendars and the option of personalized site design are internal organizational aids Find the area of study. There are also areas that are open to everyone, such as news, chat, the TU event calendar and a list of important links. After completing your studies, the s offers opportunities to maintain contacts.
VJ team Reply2all is the VJ group of FeM e. V. Since 1995 she has been trying to use the hardware available at the TU Ilmenau for video installations and live VJ'ing. "Reply2all" has been a FeM e. V.
wireless Internet access This project has been dealing with wireless LAN technologies since 2000. In the meantime, point-to-point connections as well as hot-spot operations have been used to provide the increasing number of students who live outside of the scarce dormitories on campus with the research and teaching offers of the TU Ilmenau. Since there was an increasing demand for WiFi from students with mobile devices, the first dormitory was equipped with FeM WiFi in 2012.
sky blue tv Himmelblau tv is a community television project which can be received in the time window from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on iSTUFF frequencies. In the long term, a television from Ilmenau for Ilmenau is to be established, in which the citizens actively participate. Through the participation of (elected) Ilmenauers, a real rapprochement between city and campus should be actively realized.
