from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

François Du Bois (* La Charité-sur-Loire , Burgundy ) is a French composer , marimba player , professor and writer.

Life and musical career

François Du Bois got his first music lessons at the age of 8 and turned it into his profession at 17. Between the ages of 16 and 26, he followed both a career as a percussionist in a symphony orchestra and that of a jazz drummer. In the field of classical music he worked a. a. with Lorin Maazel , Olivier Messiaen , Mstislav Rostropovich , and in jazz with Richard Galliano , Trilok Gurtu , Dominique di Piazza , Abbey Lincoln , among others .

At the age of 20 he decided to move to Burkina Faso , Africa , to perfect himself musically and to gain new experiences. There he suffered a protracted malaria disease from which he recovered. Influences of African music connected with shamanism opened up new approaches to music for him. After his return to France he completed his training with Ray Lema , a well-known African composer, singer and founder of the Ballet National du Zaïre (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo).

Du Bois founded duos with the Canadian violinist Helene Collerette (today 1st violinist in the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France ) as well as with the Australian violinist Jane Peters (Tchaïkovsky Prize winner), with whom he went on a concert tour through Germany. "With marimba and violin to the top" was the headline of the " Rhein-Zeitung ". He toured Europe and Japan with the pianist Ludovic Selmi . They also worked with " Les Tambours du Bronx ". After the duo broke up, Du Bois concentrated on composing and recording.

In 1998 he left Paris to broaden his musical horizons in Tokyo . According to speculation, his wife was the real reason for moving to Japan. At Keiō University , where many Japanese politicians, managers and lawyers studied, he founded a composition class. In the same year he founded the " l'Orchestre d'autre part ", in which 14 marimbaphonists and taiko players play. He recorded the marimba CD "Origine" with two of Keiko Abe's former students . NHK invited him to the 30-minute live broadcast “Studio Park, Special - François Du Bois”, a television show that was followed by ten million viewers.
