François Lapierre

François Lapierre PME (born June 16, 1941 in Bromont ) is a Canadian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe .

Life

François Lapierre joined the Société des Missions-Étrangères and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1965 . In 1966 he went to Mexico to improve his Spanish. The following year he was sent to Peru as a missionary before his Order transferred him back to Canada in 1971, where he performed various duties until 1979. After further missionary work in Guatemala and Honduras, he became chaplain of the international Catholic student movement in 1983. From 1986 Lapierre did the same job with the Catholic Intellectuals Movement. From 1991 to 1998 he was a superior general of his religious order .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe on April 7, 1998 . The former bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe, Louis-de-Gonzague Langevin MAfr , donated him episcopal ordination on June 16 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Gilles Ouellet PME, Senior Archbishop of Rimouski , and André Gaumond , Archbishop of Sherbrooke . In the ecclesiastical province of Québec , François Lapierre was the chairman of the Committee on Intercultural and Interreligious Affairs. He was also a member of the Christian Unity Commission.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on June 29, 2017.
