Patrick Francis Moran
Patrick Francis Cardinal Moran (born December 16, 1830 in Leighlinbridge , County Carlow , Ireland , † August 16, 1911 in Sydney ) was Archbishop of Sydney .
Life
Moran, about his mother with the Archbishop of Dublin and later Cardinal Paul Cullen used, studied at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome theology and received on 19 March 1853 in Rome, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He was then vice-rector until 1856 and then rector at the Irish College. In 1866 he was appointed by Pope Pius IX. appointed monsignor . Moran returned to Ireland as Secretary of Cardinal Cullen and accompanied him to the First Vatican Council in 1869 . In the same year he also became a member of the Royal Irish Academy .
On December 22, 1871, Pope Pius IX appointed him. to the coadjutor of Ossory . He received his episcopal ordination on March 5, 1872, Cardinal Cullen. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin , James Walshe , and the Bishop of Ferns , Thomas Furlong .
With Edward Walsh's death on August 11, 1872, Moran succeeded him as Bishop of Ossory. On March 14, 1884 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Archbishop of Sydney.
On July 27, 1885, Leo XIII took. as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Susanna in the College of Cardinals . In Sydney he promoted the spiritual and religious life, established, among other things, seminaries and a large library. He was also very interested in the other Catholic bishoprics in Australia and visited many of them. After Leo's death in 1903, he was unable to take part in the conclave due to the long journey and did not arrive in Rome until after the election of Pius X. In 1905 he was able to inaugurate the additions to Saint Mary's Cathedral . Eight years later, Cardinal Moran died of a heart attack at the age of 80. He is buried in Saint Mary's Cathedral.
Positions
Moran was suspicious of other denominations due to his experience of religious conflict in Ireland. In 1901 he refused to attend the inauguration of the Commonwealth because he saw favor with the Anglican Church .
