Francis Collins
Francis Sellers Collins (born April 14, 1950 in Staunton , Virginia ) is an American geneticist and director of the National Institutes of Health .
Life
Collins, who taught at the University of Michigan , among others , made numerous important contributions to research into the genetic defects and the localization of the genes that cause the hereditary diseases cystic fibrosis (1989), Huntington's disease (1993) and neurofibromatosis (1990). Since 1993 he has led the Human Genome Project (as director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, NHGRI, in Washington DC), in which hundreds of scientists worked to fully decipher the human genome. On July 8, 2009, he was appointed director of the National Institutes of Health by US President Obama . As a former atheist , Collins is now a devout Christian and is considered one of the most prominent proponents of the concept of theistic evolution . In his view, Christian belief and the theory of evolution are completely compatible. On the other hand, Collins firmly rejects concepts of the creationists such as intelligent design .
