Frank Hoffmeister (born October 9, 1965 in Erfurt ) is a former German swimmer who started for the Federal Republic of Germany in 1985 after fleeing the GDR .

Life

Frank Hoffmeister attended children's and youth sports school in the GDR, and in the run-up to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles , the back specialist was part of the extended national team. In May 1984 he was able to break away from the GDR team in an international swimming competition, the Seven Hill Swim in Rome , and reached the Federal Republic of Germany via the German embassy , equipped with a passport and a plane ticket. Hoffmeister initially stayed with an aunt near Bochum and successfully continued his athletic career. At the German Championships in 1985 he won the 100 m and 200 m backseat, at the German Championships in 1986 , now starting for the Wasserfreunde Wuppertal , he was successful over 50 m and 200 m backs. In 1987 , 1988 and 1989 he dominated the back distances at national championships, winning three titles each. At the first all-German championships in 1990 he started for Wiesbaden and won another title over 100 m back. During his active time, Frank Hoffmeister set 32 DSV records.

After he had decided not to take part in the European Championships in Sofia in 1985 , Hoffmeister won the bronze medal at the 1986 World Championships in Madrid over 200 m backseat, as well as silver with Bert Goebel , Michael Groß and André Schadt in the 4 × 100 m layer scale. The following year he won bronze again over 100 m back at the European Championships in Strasbourg . In February 1987 Hoffmeister had swum the 50 m back with a European record of 25.47 seconds on the short course, which he was able to improve twice in March 1991 and increase to 25.24 seconds.

In 1988 he took part in the Olympic Games in Seoul , but was unable to achieve the sporting goals he had set for himself. In the finals over 100 m back he finished seventh, over 200 m back he missed the finals, but was able to win the B final. With the 4 × 100 m individual relay he just missed an Olympic medal with fourth place.

After reunification, Hoffmeister was part of the first joint German swimming team at the 1991 World Championships in Perth , where he again won a bronze medal with Christian Poswiat , Michael Groß and Dirk Richter in the 4 × 100 m individual relay .
