Franz-Josef Selig (born July 11, 1962 in Mayen ) is a German opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Franz-Josef Selig studied church music, later singing , at the State University of Music in Cologne (now the Cologne University of Music and Dance ). While still training as a singer, he was accepted into the ensemble of the Aalto-Theater , the opera of the city of Essen , in 1989 . He was a member of it until 1995. During this time he made guest appearances at important German and foreign theaters: the Vienna State Opera , the Royal Opera House London , the Scala in Milan , the Hamburg State Opera , in Paris the Opéra Bastille and the Théâtre du Châtelet , the Metropolitan Opera New York , the Théâtre de la Monnaie Brussels , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Bavarian State Opera Munich , the Frankfurt Opera and the Lyon Opera . There he made a name for himself as a Wagner singer, especially in the roles of König Marke ( Tristan and Isolde ) and Gurnemanz ( Parsifal ).

Since then he has been a freelance singer with numerous roles on major international stages - in addition to bass roles in Wagner operas, he also played Sarastro ( Die Zauberflöte ), Rocco ( Fidelio ), Osmin ( Die Entführung aus dem Serail ) and Fiesco ( Simon Boccanegra ).

In 2012 he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Daland ( The Flying Dutchman ). In 2013 he sang this role again in Bayreuth, as well as Hunding ( Die Walküre ) for the first time . In the 2013/2014 season he sang in Barcelona in Georg Friedrich Händel's Agrippina , in Madrid King Marke in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde , in the Paris Opera in The Magic Flute and Tristan und Isolde , and in Toulouse in Daphne . In addition to his opera roles, he also gives recitals.
